Members Adam Snodgrass Posted March 2, 2013 Members Posted March 2, 2013 I'm heading down tomorrow to the upper Current (Tan Vat/Baptist) and I haven't been fishing in several months. If anyone has been out lately, just wondering if you have any advice on how the fishing has been lately, recommended flies/strategies, etc? Thanks in advance. Adam
Idylwilde Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 This area has changed a lot in the last month with the high water. The fish that are there have moved around to better water than they have had in the last year. the hole at tan-vat is not wad-able from the parking lot side now. The shoot leading to the next hole has fish on the shallow west side that move in and out of the shoot to feed. as you move further down you have to cross over the the east bank and fish the swift water next to the under cut west bank. The best chance of staying hooked up will be on and egg color Y2K under a float. If you would rather try a scud or sow bug in dark gray might be the choice. It may be a little to soon after the high water to expect a huge hatch for dry flying, but a caddis or a cdc midge will be a good choice. Be careful wading because the high water has washed away the bed sand around them and they will roll when stepped on. We have som of the new UV2 flies at Reeds that are begging for a test run on that area. Good Luck! Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Nortrad Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Normal crossing places are gone where I was below Baptist, the river has changed, which is good...

XP 590 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 My advice is stay away. Too dangerous. Leave it for me next week .
Ham Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 You could wait a couple of months and fish the Current River below Jack's Fork. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Members salmotrutta Posted March 3, 2013 Members Posted March 3, 2013 I think I may have passed you on the river this morning. Did you park at Baptist? We were up at the Ledge and fished down? It was a great day down there, the water was just the right color and the level was the best I have seen in the last year. Hope you had a great day.
Members Adam Snodgrass Posted March 4, 2013 Author Members Posted March 4, 2013 Yeah, that was probably me. I parked at Baptist and fished upstream a bit and then back down. Water was definitely up compared to the last time I was down there. Wish I could say I had a successful morning, but only caught one rainbow early and then no luck after that. Pretty sure I still have a lot to learn as far as fly selection and technique, etc. but I guess learning is half the fun. Spent a lot of time de-icing my rod guides and had a hard time tying b/c fingertips were so cold. I'll be back when it warms up a bit! Adam
Members salmotrutta Posted March 4, 2013 Members Posted March 4, 2013 We had an good day on that stretch. Let me know if I can be of any help. I had the same problem with frozen fingers. Try a little silicone on the guides, just try and not to get it on your line.
stlfisher Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 all this talk about the river has me itching to head on down....hoping to swing it soon....finishing up the honey do over the next couple weeks...hopefully.
