Members cleabig Posted March 14, 2013 Members Posted March 14, 2013 Heading to Charleston next week. Might get a chance to break away from the family to fish. Looking for recommendations where to go considering no boat and budget doesn't allow to pay a guide. Thanks for your help.
hoglaw Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 This is a strange forum to post this in, but I'll give it a shot. If you aren't willing to spend money then grab any spot on a beach and throw shrimp out and hope for the bes t. If you're serious about fishing, then take or rent a kayak and you have infinite choices in the intercoastal waterway and the attendant low country areas. Charleston has infinite possibilities for fishing. If you're not serious enough about it to rent at least a kayak or hire someone to take you out, then go to a bait shop and ask where you can post up with a cheap wally world surf rig and some shrimp. That will catch you something. If you want tomake a real fishing trip out of it, then get on google earth and find somewhere you can launch a 'yak, study the tide charts, and do some real in-shore fishing on a pretty tight budget.
Members DaveMac Posted March 18, 2013 Members Posted March 18, 2013 Drive across the Cooper River bridge to Mt. Pleasant - I used to live there - there's a county park below the bridge that has a pier that goes well out into the river. Folly Beach also has a pier that goes into the ocean, but I don't think the fishing is as good. You can fish from the pier and do pretty well without spending much money, and you don't have to worry about where to put a kayak in. Redfish are caught at the shallow end near the grass, trout and flounder in the mid-depth, and sheepshead off the end (using barnicles for bait!). There is a tackle shop that has bait and tackle rentals, and the views are great.
moguy1973 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Good website here. They have a forum with a freshwater section too. http://www.charlestonfishing.com/ -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
strangercreek Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 There is some really interesting looking shallow water (with the tides) between Charleston and Folly Beach. I really like that area. I've seen people catching fish at the Folly Pier. If anything else Folly is a neat place to visit. There is a chain of wing restaurants in the SE called Wild Wing cafe which is awesome. They are the ones who turned me on to dry wings. The one in Charleston isn't to far from the markets (just down the block to the east). I'm going to Myrtle Beach in a couple of months and hope to take a day trip down to Charleston and Folly, awesome history and sites. You should check out some of the 300 year old above ground graves, quite a sight!
Members cleabig Posted March 21, 2013 Author Members Posted March 21, 2013 Thanks guys. I ended up fishing the pier under the Ravenel Bridge (Hwy 17) on the cooper river. tide was going out. Didn't have much luck but it was beautiful. Great views. Even saw a pod of dolphin. Got to see some of the grave stones from 1700's earlier in the week. great city.
