ollie Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I'm not by any means a great pond fisherman, let alone on lakes. I feel more comfortable on rivers and creeks. Anyways, I fished a pond last year that was fun and I feel like I could do better there this year. Here's the scenerio: basically 9 acres and I'm thinking maybe 9-10 deep towards the earthen brim dam. Chunk rock on the dam side and when it gets shallow there are tons of lily pads with catails all along the bank. I fished it out of a yak and that is what I'll do again. Question is what would you throw here in about a month? I fished it last year in middle may and was thinking I missed a great window of opportunity for some nicer fish. Any ideas? Caught almost all the bass up against the dam, but couldn't help but think a month earlier and I could have caught some nicer ones in the shallows. Members Creede Posted March 22, 2013 Members Posted March 22, 2013 I grew up fishing without a real boat and mainly fished ponds and creeks. I have had great success in early spring with bluegill Colored rattle traps. As far as the shallows a 4 inch carolina rigged red lizard is my go to for ponds with any kind of vegetation. The Yamamoto fat in dark natural colors rigged weightless is always a great option as the water warms. And I always have some 1/4 oz spinner baits handy. They're good year round in a pond. Hope this helps and Goodluck
Members Creede Posted March 22, 2013 Members Posted March 22, 2013 Try a pretty aggressive ripping retrieve with the rattle trap.
Chief Grey Bear Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I love spinnerbaits in ponds. That and plastic worms depending on how mossy it is. Is this a MDC pond?? Quillback Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I'd also try a weightless, wacky rigged Senko type bait.
blue79 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 If it was me i would use a frog across the top of the lilypads or a noisey buzz bait real slow along the edge of the lilypads. Some of the biggest bass i ever caught came from a pond with lilypads with a buzzbait. The biggest perch and bluegill i ever caught came from the same pond.
ollie Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Spinnerbait was the first thing I tied on and caught only one bass with it. The majority of the bass I caught came on a 4" lizard fished near the dam. I caught enough to make it interesting, but would love to tear them up around the lily pads though. Wayne SW/MO Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 When I fished ponds a lot I always did best on shallow running lures early and then topwater later after they warmed up. I never did well on ponds after the sun got high in the sky and did best very early and some late in the evening. I always found it hard to do very well in the daytime. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
TSmith Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 My favorite catch anything type lures for a pond would be. Rooster tails, Beetle Spins, and Top water Grasshopper poppers.(The grasshoppers are unstoppable when the grasshoppers come out in the summer.) Rooster tails and beetle spins will catch bluegill, crappie, bass, perch. I believe that fishing is usually better when there is a full moon. People are more crazy when there is a full moon. Thank God He made fish the way He did so I can have better fishing when people are crazier than normal.
Members Creede Posted March 22, 2013 Members Posted March 22, 2013 If You get the chance to go again soon give the rattle trap a chance. It's really produced well for me in ponds and the rocky dam sounds like an ideal spot to throw it.
