ness Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Ouch. But if you're a dyna king guy it may be worth it. Or maybe they'll set you up with some jaws thAt work better or offer a discount to you on the small ones John
Members Hatch 82 Posted March 28, 2013 Members Posted March 28, 2013 Size 12 isn't even that small of the hook, like I posted previously I'll tie down to a 22 on there standard set of jaws. I really think there must be something wrong with your jaws the majority of the flies I tie on my professional are between 12-20 and I think it's the same standard jaws that are on all Dyna kings.
dave potts Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Well, I gotta eat a little crow. I went down this afternoon and tried a size 12 hook in the regular jaws and it would slip before I could bend it. It was plenty tight enough to tie on but not tight enough that I could bend the hook. It would hold tighter in the midge jaws which are what I use on all smaller hooks. I think the main reason you can bend a large hook in the regular jaws is that the grooves in those jaws prevent slippage no matter how much force you use. The grooves don't come into play on small hooks. $65 seems high for midge jaws. I was thinking I paid more like $30 or $35 for mine but that was several years ago. I'll be interested in how the new jaws they are sending you perform.
flyrodman Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 Update. After reading further on their website, it says I need a Return Merchandise Authorization Code. The lady I talked to before never said anything about this. I called and asked about it. The person who answered the phone this time says I need to talk to the shop I bought it from. I call the shop and that think that I am not adjusting it right (I am) they suggested that I tighten it so it is almost too hard to close the jaws. Not only does this hurt my hands but it also nicks the soft metal jaws. If I send the jaws to the shop I bought it from, they dictate whether the jaws need to be replaced, not Dyna King. Very unimpressed so far with my Dyna King. Luke Walz
Brian K. Shaffer Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 You need to figure out the correct placement of the hooks ---- for goodness sakes. The jaws have two grooves. AND the tip has a smooth flat surface. I will be a little disappointed if you really sent the vice back. flyrodman Posted April 26, 2013 Author Posted April 26, 2013 Brian, I know the correct hook placement for the jaws. The standard jaws refuse to hold size 12 and size 16 hooks no matter what configuration I tried. I did not send the vise in but opted to order the midge jaws and they hold those sizes rock solid. The midge jaws are essentially the same smooth flat surface like on the standard jaws. The midge jaws will hold the hook solid in the same position the standard jaws wouldn't which leads me to believe that there is a problem with the standard jaws. Nothing but good things to say about the midge jaws so far. Luke Walz
Brian K. Shaffer Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Well.... now you can say how well they took care of you. DynaKing is a strong brand... and better at customer service than others... Ron Abby would have it no other way... I met him in 1996 and he was more responsive than others. He was a people person... cool as a cucumber... really nice guy.. and that sold me to one day buy his vise.
