Fished a small tributary near Springfield yesterday and the white bass were everywhere. The only problem is that none of them seemed interested in anything we threw at them; minnows, rooster tails, grubs, ect. We caught 4 in 4 hours. All males. Could it be because the females aren't in there yet? It looked like they were clearing out nesting spots. Or are they just being picky?

They could have been spawning. Especially if you could see them. Put a little jig in their bed and they'll carry it out and drop it. Just get em before they drop it. I do that with Crappie all the time. If they won't take the jig just put a tiny piece of crawler on it.

In their bed? Whites don't mess around with beds, they grab the females and throw them over a log... or just 'hit it' on the fly right at the surface.

All jokes aside, they don't make beds. They spawn in current and the eggs have to be able to drift.

I always figured it was the males got a little too revved up and couldn't make it all the way to the bed. Happens to everyone.

What tributary and ill figure out how to catch em? hehe

I would guess it was the upper section of Mcdaniels. I've caught some white bass out of there before, but I'm sure they have a short spawn with it being a small lake. I could be wrong. Try fishing right at dark or shortly after, using something like a swimming minnow in purple.

I'm assuming they were spawning. The males were rubbing themselves along the bottom. It could also be possible that they have already spawned and there's just some that are still hanging around?

they absolutely murder triple ripple grubs from bass pro on a 8th ounce jig head in white, and green with red.
