I often pull double duty with my spinnerbait rod and throw buzz baits . I've been using 14lb mono but was curious if I should bump to a higher poundage .

I always used 20 or 25 lb test. They bite at the bait that has a heavy wire so the line size doesnt play much of a role . If the water is real clear, use a green line.

I like 17 lb mono for that. The 14 lb would throw a little better, but the 17 lb might help you land a fish around wood that you would lose on 14 lb. It's your choice really.

Over the years I've reduced my poundage. I think today's lines are more dependable and if you take care to monitor the first 24" you can get by with less. Smaller diameter can mean more fish, deeper runs for cranks and longer casts.

I switched to straight braid for most spinnerbaits and buzzbaits years ago - I like to throw 10/40 braid, but will use 8/30 for river Smallies or 12/50 for the big green fish. I fish spinnerbaits for Smallmouths in clear creeks and rivers a lot and catch them just fine even though the fish could see the line I guess.

I use a softer crankbait type action rod - most "spinnerbait" actions are meant for mono and are a little too fast.
