brittsnbirds Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 How about a report today on the Crappie's. Friend has been begging me to come down, finally got time but now mother nature isn't helping. Will be down this weekend. Wondered if they will still be near the banks? Really doesn't matter as I need to get out. Been cooped up with an injury. Thanks.
laker67 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I have seen mixed reports depending on which arm of the lake you are fishing. But it looks pretty cetain that you will find a few stragglers on the bank and a few more suspended at 8 to 10 feet around docks with 20 feet or less of water. Good luck on your upcoming winter trip this weekend.
rangerman Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Fished out of PB2 Tuesday...Had a quick limit. From what I had seen out of the ones I caught the eggs were still fairly tight. I caught all of my bigger ones 12+ inchers suspended about 2 foot off the bottom in about 25 foot of water. Naturally the smaller ones were staged about 5 to 10 foot off the bank. I really didnt seem to think they were spawning hot and heavy in that portion of the lake yet. Water temp was 59 degrees. I caught a few off of flat points throwing a #5 Berkley Flicker shad. Deep ones were caught on 1/8 ounch pink and white marabou jig. Shallow ones on just about any color under the rainbow.
Seth Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 My buddy fished between PB#1 and PB#2 yesterday and they brought back two limits. He said they caught a lot of small fish up shallow and then finally found some nicer fish hanging out a little ways from the bank.
brittsnbirds Posted May 6, 2013 Author Posted May 6, 2013 Decent trip considering mother nature is all jacked up! Fished off the docks at a buddy's place at the 36mm. Saturday it spit everything it could, but caught some Crappies. Most were legal but not too many over 11". Saturday only 1/3rd if that were males. Rest were females. They were in 8" of water to 20' of water, very spread out no consistent patterns. Sunday sucked. Fish were very scattered. Caught more males yesterday, and again they were spread out. The females eggs were fairly bloody. Would guestimate that this week will get them going!. All in all great trip getting out.
laker67 Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Glad you made it out and about there, brittsnbirds. Found about the same results four hollers south of where you were at. I continue to catch a few stragglers coming in to spawn off my seawall. Using the long rod still, on friday caught 5, saturday caught 21 and kept a nice limit for the fryer, on sunday caught 14 more. My wife and nephew were catching them off the dock at 11 to 12 feet on sunday as well. This morning I have caught 7 more seawall stragglers so far. Saturday and sunday, I caught the same 2lb female kentucky, in the same spot, on the same fly. She is in 2.5 ft of water at the base of a stick up, I suspect she is staging for spawn, but cannot see a nest so far. It is always a nice suprise to catch them rough fish while chasing crappie.
