et84 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hit Panther Creek for a couple hours yesterday, caught one smallmouth on a green/brown over white super hair clouser. Stumbled upon this nest, nearly stepped on it. It was directly on the ground, no cover around it. I thought at first they might be turtle eggs, but I haven't had any luck identifying them as such (MDC's website is really hard to navigate and doesn't have very detailed info about certain species). What do you all think made this nest? "Sometimes it seems like such a hard life, but there's good times around the bend. TSmith Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Wow where do you fish on panther? I believe that fishing is usually better when there is a full moon. People are more crazy when there is a full moon. Thank God He made fish the way He did so I can have better fishing when people are crazier than normal.

I've often wondered how the hatchlings survive, but they obviously do. Maybe they have the no smell cover of fawns? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
jdmidwest Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I have had them raise in the yard in the past, the young ones are pretty cute and fuzzy with leg and the look of small ostriches. They have a pretty good natural camo and they squat and freeze when disturbed. The mother will dart in and out, run around the ground and do the ole broken wing trick to lure you away. If you follow her, she will rise and land and start over drawing you away. Pretty good defense. They will nest in the dangest places out in the open. They like open fields and gravel bars. Of course, it could be a whip poor will nest, I think they nest on the ground. The eggs look a little large for a kill deer.
