9LB Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Good Weekend for walleyes. Would you believe me if I told you the small one for the weekend was 20". Limit Sat and Sunday. Fuzz E grub and a minnow was pretty hot. The big walleyes are shallow. You can find the little baby feeders in the deeper banks on channel breaks.
Members Slowtroller Posted June 10, 2013 Members Posted June 10, 2013 Nice. got family comin in this weekend. Were you working shallow flats or casting rock banks up shallow. Would like to get into a few this weekend. Thanks.
Dkman Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Thanks for the info. Heading up to Stockton this Friday with the wife. Using some history on this forum had planned on trolling cranks and crawler harness' around 20' deep. I do not have much experience fishing for walleyes and have used this site for some learning/tips. Will try shallow as well. Thanks again
powerdive Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Nice going! We had a day like that once, in August. Multiple limits of 20-24 inchers in one spot. Very unusual, very fun. Thanks for the info, 9LB.
Walleyedmike Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Way to go 9lb! Wish I could get down there. WM
9LB Posted June 11, 2013 Author Posted June 11, 2013 The eyes are definitely in 20 - 25 feet and even up to 30 feet this weekend with the high water. These walleyes were females no eggs but their tails were beat to heck from taking care of her bed. This is why I did not keep any of the bigger fish, just the one pic. I was miles away from the dam where they supposedly all went to spawn months ago. I THINK the eyes that have been in the lake a few years spawn later on the big flats and the big run to the dam is all the schooled up planted fish that are just playing follow the leader. NO way these sow walleyes have not been spawning in the past few weeks. NOW, all of the 20 inchers that were caught in the deep water had no signs that they have been bedding or anything like that, they looked like they just came out of the planter truck every fish was within 1/2 inch of each other ?? I think the 4-5 year fish that have grown up a bit have an entirely different spawn then what we perceive as the big run to the Dam. We caught 0 small bass in the area we caught most the Bigger walleyes, my guess is they did not want to be eaten by the big Eyes. I am no biologist but I average about 600 hours a year on Stockton. This is two years In a row I have found my best walleye fishing when trying to catch post spawn bass in the shallow water.
9LB Posted June 11, 2013 Author Posted June 11, 2013 I caught a lot of eyes trolling a Blue Flickr Shad. All the good fish were caught on a brown/orange fuzz e grub tipped with a minnow and I did catch a few on a bucktail jig with a minnow. I brought out all my old fishing gear from up north. I must have 100 bucktail jigs and a ton of Pike and Muskie lures collecting dust.
bfishn Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Great catchin'! But... .... These walleyes were females no eggs but their tails were beat to heck from taking care of her bed. I THINK the eyes that have been in the lake a few years spawn later on the big flats and the big run to the dam is all the schooled up planted fish that are just playing follow the leader. NO way these sow walleyes have not been spawning in the past few weeks. ... ...erronious conclusions. I can't dance like I used to.
