curtisce Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I've floated upper section of the Niangua before but couldn't find much info as to the lower section. Went friday to check it out. Drove to the Lead Mine access and then using Google Earth made my way to Barclay. A couple of the roads it showed ended in deadends. I went back to YY which channges to Jugtown Rd. That junctions with 62-152 which led to Barclay spring rd. Put in there at 10:00. Started fishing w/o much luck. not many floaters on the water. Passed the campgrounds as I haeded downstream each had more partiers out in the water as I went. Started catching fish on the green worm/split shot. Surprised that my first fish was a 14" Rainbow. Started catching some smallies once I got in some areas where there was bigger rocks not just gravel bottom. Ended up the first evening just below the Oldham takeout. Caught a 18" smallie there. woke the next AM about 5:30 looked to the sky to see what looked like rain clouds. Got on the river alittle before 7:00, few light showers. Caught a few smallies, one 16". Rounde the corner and I could see trouble was coming. Lots of thunder and a downpour for about an hour. I was having to bail my boat about evey 15 minutes. after it quit the fishing seemed to die. Don't know if it was the storm or that the riverbottom had changed back to mostly gravel. Last fish I caught was another trout. My thought on this stretch of river. 1. Beautiful 2. Isolated 3. Lots of trees in the water which = lots of broken lines. The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check

Goggle-Eyed Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Glad you caught a few fish! This year, I have caught more trout on the lower section than any year in the past. Probably more this year than the past 10 combined... Did you bike from Lead Mine back to Barclay??? If yea, Holy Crap!!!! Joe
curtisce Posted June 17, 2013 Author Posted June 17, 2013 Yep 3 steep climbs to get there but not a bad shuttle the river has a lot. Of bends through there The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check

OzarksRiverman Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 How do you like that Paddlejon boat? Does it handle ok in tight spots?
curtisce Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 I love fishing in it. I generally stand in the back and can work the trolling motor. I had a pedastal plate mounted in the front so with a fisherman up there he can fish sitting. 2 guys standing at the same time makes it tippy. It paddles and maneuvers much like a canoe but I don't risk getting it in tght spot. Loaded down there isn't much freeboard.
