rcguy Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I'm heading toTruman lake for a few days stay and my 6 year old granddaughter. I'm thinking about taking her to Bennet for the day since it's only about an hour away. She is interested in fishing now and can throw her spinning rod pretty well. I've never taken a kid fishing at Bennett in all these years. Do they rent kids waders? Would you suggest zone 2 fishing throwing a rooster tail? Any ideas for success?
mic Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Yea the place at the top of the hill with camper rentals...name leaves me. They specialize in spin fisherman, and have a facebook page on a weekly fishing report. Think it starts with a W.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 6 is a little small, but I would probably try her with a Super Duper early, probably in the dam apron or the whistle. The store rents kids waders. If it were me I would take her below the Truman Dam with either Rooster Tails or minnows. The west side has stairs and a lot of flat areas for her to fish safely. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ciRe Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Spoons and crankbaits (That aren't huge) do pretty good also sometimes. When I was younger (I was probably 17 so 8 years ago) there was a guy throwing a jerkbait by the spillway and caught a 5 1/2 lb brown. Sadly he kept it but it just shows ya that there can be fish to catch on anything there really.

Wayne's right, I forgot the store rented them.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 There are some good crankbaits, but none that I believe are compatible with a 6 year old. Tiny trebles and kids are risky, and in my opinion when there are 2 it is too risky. The wading might be questionable also. Bennett is not over run with people sympathetic to young children unfortunately and she won't be able to wade out to the "line". The new concrete ledges at the apron hole would be great, especially if you could get her there early enough to get a spot. A spot there and a black and yellow marabou jig would almost guarantee success. I would still lean towards Truman if they run water. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Born to Fish Posted June 26, 2013 Members Posted June 26, 2013 I would suggest starting her in zone 3 drifting half of a white plastic trout worm on a size 10 hook with a bb split shot (12 inches above the worm) on 4 pound test line. Can't miss!! White crappie jigs work great too. Years ago, I even used cigarette butts a few times, after cleaning trout with them in their stomachs! Good luck and enjoy!!
dave potts Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Larry's rents waders for $8 a day. Think Weavers also rent them. Dave
oneshot Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 If she is just wanting to catch Trout she could just use Power Bait in Zone 3. At Truman might take her to the Hatchery to Catfish. oneshot
NoLuck Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Jerry, when I was a kid my grandma would take down to the Suzy hole on the rocks and cut mini marshmallows in half and dead drift them under a float with some split shot to get it down to the fish. Never failed her to catch a limit quicker than anyone else in the family. She was usually done before 8 o'clock a.m.
