RiverRunner Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 How much trouble would it be to float from Quarry down to the confluence at dead low water. I have a 20' fiberglass trout boat that will go pretty shallow, but a lot of the Norfork can get pretty skinny on dead low water as I recall, and very dangerous at 1 unit in places. The closing of the access will probably improve the fishing in the area, although it's a darn shame that those without boats and the ability to make the long walk from the handicap access won't be able to access the area. I also worry about people getting caught in rising water making the long walk up there. This will also increase pressure even more at Quarry and Handicap as well. I would think that the AGFC, or Baxter Co. would have the means to purchase an access on the area, esp. considering how much revenue trout fishing brings into the area. I would support an increase in liscense, trout permit costs, etc. to pay for it.
Terry Beeson Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 Surveys indicate trout fishing on the Norfork is responsible for almost $80million a year in economic value to the area. How much of that will be impacted by the closing of Mac's would be one determining factor for AGFC. John Berry Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 This will certainly have a negative impact on the area's revenues (including mine). Taking a river boat from Quarry park to the confluence at dead low water would require a bit of boat dragging. I would think that fishing would actually get better with the greatly reduced pressure. I am going to float the river in a canoe in the near future to see how that works. I would assume that it would be a nice trip. Members Pedre Posted January 16, 2007 Members Posted January 16, 2007 I just joined this forum today and am in need of a favor. I was wondering if there is any more information about the closure of mcclellans. I am about 7 hours away and have planned a trip to roses march 10-14. It would be great if I could find out as much information as possible before I make the trip up there. Thanks, Pedro
Danoinark Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Pedre As far as I know it closed for any access on January 1. I have not heard anything to the contrary. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
John Berry Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 To my knowledge Dano is right. I have not heard anything to the contrary. My favorite access to the Norfork is no more. John, of all people who I hated this for was you and your wife. I know how much the Fork means to you two and especially that hallowed stretch. John Berry Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Dano, I fear that you are right. We miss it already. To add insult to injury they ran water for the last month and a half of the year effectively preventing me from saying my good by. I plan on accessing it by canoe. Launching from Quarry park, it is only a two mile float down stream. If the water comes up you have a safe means of egress. The only trick is the shuttle.
