BilletHead Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Nice Chris, I wondered if you were going this weekend and was getting ready to text you. They pinched the water down more where we had been going. It is done now for sure unless we can find them deep. Thanks for the report, might have to drive up to the big lake and watch you catch, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Also, I decided not to sell my other shad tank so if I already had someone in the boat with me already or you wanted to take Pat, we could meet up some morning to catch shad and put my extra one in your boat for you to use.
BilletHead Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Sounds good Chris. We may take you up on that. Also if you have that empty seat let me know. Thanks too for the text message. I have and even half way know how to throw a cast net "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Members Wahoo61 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Members Posted July 23, 2013 Thanks for the posts guys. I have not had the chance to get down so I have nothing to add. Tight lines!!!
Members DerekB Posted July 24, 2013 Members Posted July 24, 2013 I sometimes throw a cast net for shad when I'm catfishing. I've always had decent luck in the coves just east of KK island (north of Osage Bluff). Sometimes they run too small, but lately it's been good. I'd like to try my luck using shad for hybrids, but I don't know the best way to rig them. I've thrown deep diving crankbaits around O-3 and had decent luck, but I think live shad is the better way to go. Any suggestions? Great thread, by the way.

When fishing down lines, I usually Carolina rig them. Weight of egg sinker varies (1-4oz) depending on size of shad, how much the boat is moving, and whether or not I want to bait to drift up in the water column as I move around. I also throw them out away from the boat on free lines. Sometimes weightless and sometimes with a large split shot depending on how deep I want them to go. I use circle hooks and hook through the cartilage on the tip of the nose. If you want them to stay on the surface you can also tie a balloon to your free line.
Members DerekB Posted July 24, 2013 Members Posted July 24, 2013 Thanks, Bird Watcher. That doesn't sound much different than how I fish for cats...except that the bait is still alive, of course :-)
Members Wahoo61 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Members Posted July 25, 2013 Derek I basically fish the same bird watcher does. Usually 14 to 18 feet down but it really depends on where you are marking fish. 14 feet is a good general depth but if you are marking fish above 10 feet it is good idea to have a shad on a unweighted hook. If you need any more details feel free to ask. Thanks for the info on shad. I hope to go this weekend and I will post if I find them
Members Wahoo61 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Members Posted July 25, 2013 Derek check out videos on YouTube search for thewipersniper all one word. Jack vanderpool is a guide at Truman and he slays the wipers. Might be worth the money to book a trip with him and learn how to do it. He is a really nice guy. Website is www.jackvanderpoolguide.com. I am going to book a trip with him to see if he can teach me a thing or two. He basically fishes like bird watcher and I do
Bird Watcher Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Wahoo, I keep looking around for you when I'm there, but I usually find out once I get back and check here that you weren't on the lake that day. I'm in an older dark gray with red lettering Alumaweld/xpress bass boat with a 50 gallon grayline tank in the middle. Maybe I'll run into you one of these days and we swap s can swap some stories.
