Wanted to put this out to everyone so they can take precautions. Had my boat in front of the house in SW Springfield, as we are preparing for a lake vacation. Sometime between last Saturday and this evening, someone stole the gas tank out of the boat. Not a little 5-gallon tank, the big 20-gallon tank. Cut the hoses and wires to the fuel gauge, but they left the batteries, trolling motor, rods, and tackle, and the fish finder, oh and their knife. I work from home, and have a view of the boat and never saw anything out of the ordinary during the last couple days, so it had to have been late at night.

This has been a troubling summer at the Rock in terms of thievery...We keep our boats in Needle's Eye Boat Dock and have had a lot of problems. Looks like the good 'ol days of leaving tackle in the boat without worry are over. Water Patrol told us there has been a big problem with joyriding too. We were a victim of this a couple of weeks ago. Many of the boat covers were peeled back and vadalized during the middle of the week. A couple sustained serious damage to their ignitions from tampering. Our Cobalt was found floating near Green Shores. Luckily the only damage was a broken speedometer. Needless to say...We don't hide the keys in the boat any more. I know a lot of the forum members trailer boats and ramp in every time, but if you keep your boat on a dock be please be aware of this growing problem. Most boat docks on Table Rock are PRIVATE and clearly posted as so...If you don't have a boat in a dock or permission to be on it, you are trespassing.

I've heard of guys buying trailcams and mounting them near the boat.

I have one of those long, plastic coated, cut-proof security cables I use to run through the bow eye; then padlock it thru the dock. Yes, with enough effort, it could be cut; but thieves/punks are usually lazy; my hopes are they will just mess with a boat in the next slip. So far so good.

Wow, It must be FUN to cruise around in your boat using stolen gas tanks, fishing equipment and boating gear. Sometimes I wonder how people sleep at night. For years I always left my gear in boat. I am coming down in August for 2 weeks and use a private dock at a resort. Same place I always go for years, never had a problem. Always left all my gear in boat. All my rods are custom built, build them myself, I certainly dont need those ripped off! Guess l'll have to be more diligent.

I hate thieves also which is one of the reasons I really enjoy selling security systems. I think I have sold around a dozen camera systems to docks up in the Lake of the Ozarks area that were having issues this year and several lake homes. If anyone ever needs a quote on a alarm or camera system I would be happy to help.
