moguy1973 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Took my kayak out to the Gravois Mills access Sunday and headed up the Spring Branch and the Gravois Branch. Caught 10 fish total, nothing real big, just nice healthy fish. Had 8 LMB with most between 1 1/2 and 2lbs, a nice size green sunfish and a 2 1/2lb catfish. The catfish came on a white/blue/chart twin spin spinner bait of all things. The rest all came on 5" watermelon/gold flake and green pumpkin/gold flake stick worms wacky rigged. Flat water with a breeze gives a pretty good workout when out on these big waters... Way up in Gravois Branch is pretty nice, clear, and ozark stream-ish without the flow. Paddled up until I got to the first real riffle that I would have had to walk up and turned around. Pics: Notice the one in the last picture the big hook on the bottom lip it has. Haven't seen anything like that before. I now know what a shad ball is as up these creeks I saw large groups of 6-8" gizzard shad swimming around in circles... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Old plug Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 During WW2 there was a saying.loose lips sink ships. There is liable to be some people's round here that would like to sink a kayak after that post.

I guess that LOZ being a good fishery for bass is supposed to be a secret? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

It's mouth looks smaller because it looked like it had been hooked before and got part of its mouth ripped off. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Old plug Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I was teasing you. You said you went up spring branch from the pictures it looked like you were going up gravois creek. But yes a lot of the best places are converted. At least while they are producing.

I was going to say...even if it was secret, many boats wouldn't have been able to get up in where I was because it was so shallow in places... Yeah, spring branch isn't real big. Just that pool next to Hwy 5 and a little bit up next to the cabins to the left of that. Caught the ones in the 2nd two pictures right near that pool by the cabins under that dock. Did see about a 4lb+ in some shallow water there that didn't want to look at anything I threw... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Old plug Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 There is ome holes higher up but there are land owners up there that are beyond belief. Wrench has had trouble with one if them. They call the sheriff for almost anything. I do not go up there. I could not get out of a kayak if I got in one. About as far as I go is the shallow brush area where the creek turns into the lake. And then only rarely. I m not even fishing for bass right now. It has been pretty terrible bass fishing in the lake. I have been fishing for gar. I just started doing that and it sure can put the excitement into summer dole drums. I caught 2 40"long this evening that really put on a show. Had a couple tarpon like jumps and a couple of very splashy runs almost like a tail walks right by the boat.
moguy1973 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 We saw a couple 3'+ gar surfacing near our pontoon as we swam Monday and Tuesday. Kind of un-nerving when you jump in to swim and you see one of those surface about 15' from where you are. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
