flyman Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Anyone have any tips or suggestions for the Cape Fair area? I mostly fish between Indian Point and Kimberling City and just branching out to explore a bit more of the lake. I went last night to scout. Had to cut it short due to weather. (Dumb me, should have checked the weather before I left. ) Seemed like there were lots of good spots with potential (bluffs, submerged road, foundations, flats, etc) so I'm definitely going back to scout those areas again. Does anyone know if the area fishing suffered from the spring flood at all or if it has since recovered? There used to be a girl from Cape Fair Marina that would post excellent reports here. Don't know what happened to her. She hasn't posted in a year. I would love to see more reports from her!
Champ188 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Guide Pete Wenners posts a very detailed video fishing report on his website at hookedonbass.com. He fishes a lot in the James River area, so this weekly report always has some good information from up there.
flyman Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 That's right! I have seen those but forgot about them. I will check that out. Thank you, sir!
flyman Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Thanks again, Champ! You really nailed it on the head. I went and looked and there is one from today relating to exactly what I'm after. My strategy is to try and beat the 'dog days' heat by going up around the rivers for some stained water. That is exactly what he is talking about this week. He goes farther up than what I would have thought. I can keep drop-shotting and doing what I have been down in the clear water. It's working for me. I'm just to diversify and keep learning new tactics and areas. The other thing I was curious about... I heard that area really got torn up with the floods last spring and fishing was not as good. I guess it must have recovered since he is doing OK up there.
Bill Babler Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 To me the James fishes a lot like Grand, and Lake of the Ozarks. Which at times is wonderful Pretty much the same water color at times as the two mentioned. Pete does a wonderful job up there with his reports and info. He has maintained that video site so well it is just hard to believe. Great work by a super guy. Realtime info. that really matters. Capt. Rick is also good up the James however don't know how much he is willing to give away. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
flyman Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Thanks, Bill. You're right about the work Pete does. The reports are detailed and up-to-date. It's generous for him to dedicate the time to do it. And for you to share your reports as well.
Champ188 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Glad it was of use to you, flyman. Not only are Bill and Pete very generous with their info, you can take what both of them say to the bank. Also, I believe Pete stores some older reports on his website as well. Not sure how far they go back but might be worth looking into.
Josh Holt Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I fished with my brother today around cape fair from 430 to 83o we caught aroung 25 fish total 8 were keepers with the biggest around 4lbs. Long flat points with drops and humps have been producing a good deep cranking bite for me, their is also a square bill bite early in the morning and late afternoon with a pearch color works best. Most fish we caught today were 20 to 30ft range caught several on cranks but all our keepers came off a big worm and a pig rigged beaver the big beaver I dont drop shot much cause all i can manage to catch on it is all short fish good numbers but they are all short, The colors of worms we have been useing are plumb candy, tequela green, watermelon candy red, and have been picking a few up on the tomatoe red worm in deep trees. I try anymore not to go for the quantity but quality fish. I fished the firday night tournament the 12th took 5th out of 20 boats and fished it last friday had five good keepers but they were not good enough lol. But all i can say is if you can find brush piles in 20 to 30ft range that are not put in by the conservation department they will hold the biggest fish cause their not beat to death by all the fishermen on a daily basis I know where some are but giving the location of my brushpiles is like asking a women her age or weight she is just gona lie to you lol but find brush and you will find good fish. Target them with big worms or beavers make multiple cast from different angles with different baits and colors some times all it takes is haveing that bait at the right angle to get a hog to nail it.
Members CanoeBoy Posted July 25, 2013 Members Posted July 25, 2013 I've only fished cape fair once and it was after it rained. The water was completely stained light brown. Not sure if it matters but I heard the bite is better once it clears up a little. Saw a sign that said welcome to cape fair the "bass capital" so it got me excited, but after a day of butt whoopin' I felt like spitting on that darn sign on the way home.
flyman Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Josh, thanks for the tips. I appreciate! I wonder how many cities claim to be the bass capital.
