Old plug Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I have a few of these and put them on my home made top waters. I have mixed feelings about them. I think sometimes they are better then the next tine I do not. I would send a picture but for some reason the photo does not post on the forum from my IPad. They are hard to find they were invented by Dave Frits. Only place I have found them is on Jann's Netcraft
Old plug Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 I do not think anyone knew what kind of hook i was talking about. They are suppose to be used on plugs in place of regular trebles. Myself i would not use them as a general practice but i do on my top waters because I only have one hook on them. The problem I think I might be might be missing to many smaller fish but the propellors are 2" long and i hoped this would get me a better hookup.
RSBreth Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I like most Rapala Lures but the ones that come with those I clip the extra long hook point off. Not a fan - too many snags.
Old plug Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 REBreth---- thats not a Rapala lure. Its called dark cedar. They only come in 2 colors light cedar and dark cedar. I make them on my lathe. I make them for myself and my son has a couple. Its a real good top water but I think I am missing some hookups due to the hook design. As stupid as it sounds now that I have went to all the trouble to post thisI I think I can see why it is not doing the job from the picture.
moguy1973 Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I think what he meant is that some Rapala's come with Sure Hook trebles on the rear hook. What about adding a hook behind the back prop? A lot of the prop lures I've seen have a hook on the belly like yours and another behind the back prop. Old plug Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Yeah i have tried that i hate the fouled hook deal. That is a major part of the reason I wanted my own. The other reason was because iI wanted the largest pop blades Without a real big body. So I been playing with this thing and trying different things and have turned several bodies to come to this point. Its been fun. I was just wondering if others had ever used them. That torpedo in your picture is one great lure. I used them a lot. But i was looking for more splash and bubbles is why i made this one
Al Agnew Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I tried them on walk the dog lures, hoping to get a little better hook up ratio, but didn't find them to be any better. And they look stupid.
MOsmallies Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I replaced the tail hook on a square bill crankbait once with one of the sureset hooks and it did make a difference one day. I was fishing an ozark stream in early October and they were interested in the crank, but weren't choking it. They'd take quick tips at the tail of the bait. I ended up catching around 30 that day, and I believe at least 20 of those were caught on that extended hook on the rear treble. Other than that, they have never mattered and I agree with Al... they do look stupid. Might be a good hook to keep in your tackle box if they are really tentative but nipping at the tail. Old plug Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Al i agree with that 100 percent. Nice to know someone out there got taken in by them. After I looked at the picture of the hook on the lure in the post for some reason it gave me a different perspective. I think the barb is to small and to close to the bend. I will change it and just put another large treble back on. Maybe with with a bead above the hook ring to make The hook ride a bit lower. The whole thing started when I thought those 2" prop blades would interfere with the hook up. I have no evidence that they ever did. Maybe I can play around and invent something on my own. But the lure itself works fine and I have another one with a single rear hook that does well also but it does not really cause the commotion the way this one can. The whole thing started because I do not like to cast those big bladed buzz baits. I was looking for something that would match the commotion and still be able to cast and stop it in the water like a Torpedo. .
Old plug Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Well i got to thinking( well attempting to think) about it. I knew i wanted more hook deeper so I took a swivel and cut both ends off and drilled out the center. I think this will do it. I will find out I late this evening
