BilletHead Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Well really it wasn't as bad as I thought. My bigfoot decoys needed a head job. I am not very careful and some were losing there flocking on the heads. Wanted to do it last year but put it off. I read how some were doing it and also called Mr. Bird Watcher for his input as he had done some before. First thing he told me last year was to not by the high priced kits, then it was better if to people did it as a team effort, use a squirt type bottle (mustard ketchup type) and flat black oil paint. Also use a box to catch unused flocking salvage for next time. I ordered a pound of flocking. Got it in the mail. Went to Wally world and got some rustoleum flat black oil paint, some one inch foam brushes and a squirt bottle. Squirt bottle in housewares for 97 cents, cheaper brushes in are dept. four for I think a buck in package of four where as if in hardware 57 cents each. Cannot remember how much the paint was right now just a quart will do bookoos heads. Yesterday I masked off the eyes and cheek patches on the heads. Today I got the Mrs. to help out. Got a plan going Pat would do the painting and me he flocking. Hardest part was the painting so her job Handed them off to me and I did the puffing out of the bottle on the painted heads. Gave them a good coat, tapped off the excess and repeated on the head again. I am more than happy with the results. I would not mind doing this every couple if not every year if needed especially if you have help like I have. Have another dozen and a half mixed full bodies and some floaters to do maybe this weekend. All in all not as bad as I thought it would be to do a bunch of flocking geese, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Feathers and Fins Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Looks good and its fun, Marty use used socks when you are done hunting to cover the heads and they will last a long time between flockings. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
BilletHead Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Yes Scott Pat and I talked about maybe doing the sock thing this season as we were flocking . She then stated that I was so much in a hurry to set up and take down and doing it would soon go by the wayside. After 36 years she knows me to well. Let me know when you finish up and I will send some more your way. Yes, somewhere I have a beat up trash sack full of old socks from my grandiose plan to cover them all up when finished hunting each day. I think the first time I picked up after dark, or picked up in a sleet storm, or picked up trying to get out of the field before the big flock made their appearance, they were abandoned. I can't really remember how it went down now, but it was something along those lines.
BilletHead Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Are you telling me Chris you need to get Flocked? Bring them down and get them Flocked. I could keep up with two painters. Pat says I'm the best Flocker she knows. Oh bring them with the masking already done. Did you get the e-mail with the pics of the spoon mold? Feathers and Fins Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 So your a good Flocker and you want Chris come down for a good Flocking wearing a mask to a Flocking Party? Sounds like a Flocking mess to me. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
BilletHead Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Can you just imagine the cloud of flocking fibers when the flocking starts? Might have to run the dust collector in the shop. Takes care of wood dust. I think the paint fumes were worse:) Scott do you need flocked too? Bird Watcher Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 hahaha...endless possibilities with this one. I'm too lazy to flock decoys anymore. I really should, just can't make myself do it. I did get the picture of the spoon mold. They look good. I have a good inventory right now, I don't think I can break off what I have before cold weather gets here, but I may hit you up about them this winter to build an inventory for next summer. Here's to you and hoping you and your wife get the chance to have more fun flocking this week.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 No, my wife and I Flocked last year. It was long and hard and took a few weeks to get all the Flocking done but we did it. Had to re-flock a few times durring season as well as a few wads caused more Flocking needed. Post season cleaning also revealed more flocking needed https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
