Went fishing in Jeb's boat today, mid lake area, Jeb put a whuppin on me, he caught 8 black bass and I only 1. That's right, only one for me :yuush: But it's still good to be out on the water! Anyway it was just a fish here and there, drop shot put the most fish in the boat, followed by c-rigged worms. Some decent average size, Jeb caught a 17" smallie for big fish of the day, and a few 15-16" spots. Water temp 81. Not much wind, and there's a lot of small shad out there.

and there's a lot of small shad out there.

And that's why the bite is tough.

All that bait is making the fish "snack" sporadically and therefor, they are not terribly "hungry" or actively feeding. The instinctual food competition of "MINE!!" is not in affect yet. (MINE meaning.....like the seagulls from Finding Nemo) That will change coming in the fall though and the fish will become more competitive feeders. (I hope)

The fish were fat and healthy, and I do believe those shad make it tough as they are everywhere. There were scattered bass surface feeding, but they would come up just about anywhere. Probably a good time to be a troller :D

I did dredge up a Shad-Rap, SR7 I believe. Had a giant swivel on the front with about 20 feet of braid.

I did have one bass spit up a shad while I was bringing it in. It was a normal, 3" shad, not the guppy size we saw so many schools of.

Very spotty fishing, as Jeff said. Odd thing with some spots yesterday. I'd see the classic "spagehetti" picture of active fish over brush piles, etc and we'd not get bit on the classic summer stuff we normally catch them. That's usually almost a guaranteed few fish when I see that kind of thing. But I've only been back on Beaver a couple of weeks after spending the summer fishing in Wisc, so still trying to figure them out, I guess.

Fishing was overall much better than our trip to the dam area last week. Many more bites and lots more active fish in the mid-lake area.

If we can get a true shad kill this fall / winter; and after the bass are used to foraging when they feel like it instead of when opportunities present themselves - look out for some big time fun in a couple months...
