Members mhumke Posted September 16, 2013 Members Posted September 16, 2013 Recently purchased a Lake condo and I'm bringing three buddies to Taneycomo this weekend who have never fished there. They are experienced fisherman, just never been to Taneycomo. We will probably not be fly fishing, we will be mostly bait fishing, power bait, worms, maybe throw a rapalla or cleo. I was thinking get a boat and fish Monkey Island down to through the Landing. Does that sound about right for the most fish for our buck?? I'd like for my friends to be able to catch quite a few fish and have a good time. In other words I'm feeling the pressure to deliver. LOL, since I always talk about coming down here for good trout fishing. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. Oh and no need to go into regulations etc. Well aware of all that! Thanks!
Members BIG K Posted September 16, 2013 Members Posted September 16, 2013 crawlers with a shot of air always a good bet. small float and micro jig or trout magnet will catch alot of fish. if area has been stocked cleos will boat alot fish you might flatten the barbs if you release alot of fish. lilleys to the landing most times is a good bet good luck and have fun
Travis Swift Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 We caught lots of fish between short creek and trout hollow and right across from the cooper creek access and at monkey island this weekend all on magnets. 2 weeks ago we caught all we wanted on magnets in front of fall creeks dock down river 200 yrds or so
Mr. Ed Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Nice thing about Tany is it's pretty easy to fish. Motor up to fall creek and just drift with the current back down. Keep drifting until you stop catching fish and repeat. Worms... Power Bait... jigs... they all catch fish. If you're lucky someone in your group will hook a big one.
Members mhumke Posted September 17, 2013 Author Members Posted September 17, 2013 Hey guys thanks for the feedback. I'm still learning and this site and forum has been very helpful. I've actually been fishing Taneycomo for almost 20 years, but the first 18 of them it was only maybe 3-6 times per year on family vacations and mainly from the bank or public docks we used to stay at the old fishing cabins that is now where the Landing is, and then when that shut down we'd stay at Lilley's and a few other places when Lilleys was booked. Now that we have our own place and I get down about once a month I have really started to see how much fun the entire lake can be. I started fly fishing last year in the trophy area, and have been kayak fishing about half dozen times or so this year so now I've seen almost the whole lake. I actually caught a 21 inch brown from the kayak last spring almost directly across from bass pro on the opposite bank on a baby brown rapalla, one of my biggest fishing thrills ever. A buddy of mine was in another kayak with me took a bunch of pics and let her go. I've been hooked every since!! Thanks for all the tips!!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 18, 2013 Root Admin Posted September 18, 2013 There are a lot of rainbows 1/4 mile above and 1/2 mile below Fall Creek right now. Today I fly fished above the Narrows for 2 hours. Cloudy but slick surface and they were tough (after 9 am). Before then, the guides said it was very good using black micro jigs. Then I dropped down below the Narrows and started throwing a 1/16th oz sculpin jig. The wind did pick up some which helped. They wouldn't leave it alone. Below Fall Creek- the same. Caught some nice ones but mostly small. Sculpin/ginger did well too.
Members mhumke Posted September 18, 2013 Author Members Posted September 18, 2013 How can you tell where Fall Creek starts is there a landmark or sign so we know when we can fish with bait and where we cannot? I have a general idea of where it is and I've seen the map, but not positive where it starts and don't want to get in trouble. Thanks.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 18, 2013 Root Admin Posted September 18, 2013 Fall Creek Dock. It's a big dock on the west wide of the lake. Can't miss it. No docks between my dock and theirs. Above it is where Fall Creek comes in, same side of the lake. There is signs on the up lake side. But the up lake edge of the mouth marks the boundary across the lake.
LittleRedFisherman Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I'd try the jigs that Phil is talking about, having never fished Taney till last year, I watched some of Phils youtube stuff on fishing Jigs, my wife and I caught fish on jigs on our anniversary, can't beat that!! If you happen to catch a lot of fish and wanna mix it up, I caught several browns on a white 1/16jig, nothing huge but was cool to catch some browns!! I now have an arsenal of zig jigs i'm hoping to try out there in a couple weeks. Hoping to talk my wife into staying at Lillys... There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
