redshad Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I headed out early Sat. morning, brr cold ride across the lake, spent some time around mid-lake early throwing a square bill. I caught several shorts and only had one keeper by 9:30 am. I decided to head up the river and see what was going on, the water always cools faster up the creeks and rivers. I started down a channel bank with the square bill still catching shorts. I pick up plastic and started flipping wood. It only took 2 flips and 3.5 pounder a few minutes later I broke off a 5 +. Upgraded to heavier pool with 17 lbs test and kept flipping. I caught 4 or 5 more in the 3 to 4 range. It was high noon and I had to get home, the sweety's parents were having a get together. Went back out Sunday afternoon around 3:00. Fish were biting much better than Sat. morning, could catch lots of small ones on crankbait with a keeper here and there. I was getting several quality fish 4 to 5 by flipping the wood. The water is not real clear and the fish are were shallow. I wasn't fishing over 8 ft deep. Most were in the 3 to 5 ft range. They were really tight to the wood. If you didn't flip right next to the wood you wouldn't get a bite. Heavy line a must. I broke off twice with 17 lb test they are deep in the stuff. Most were caught on banks with the channel swinging close. Best bait for flipping was a shad colored beaver tail. The fall feeding frenzy has begun get out there and get guys. Happy Fishing!!
Members Golf Pro Posted September 23, 2013 Members Posted September 23, 2013 That's great. I fished Saturday and it was not good. Did you have to go way up a fiver or just where the wood starts?
redshad Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 I wasn't way up. Just where there was good wood. Had to be close to deep water.
Ham Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 It's so fun to figure out a pattern. Sounds like you were really dialed in. I love that. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
hknfsh Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Thanks for a great heads up redshad !! You definitely found a pattern....love when that happens ! Knew we should had found some timber but not much in the area we were in. Be safe.
Bassmaster21 Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Great report. I was also out Saturday morning and it was chilly. We were only out a few hours and managed about 10 shorts all on either a crawdad crank or a little crawdad trailer I used on its own to flip and pitch. We were in my buddies boat so he gets control of where we fish an he is strictly a bank fisherman - Picks a banks leaves the trolling motor on and zooms down it. Could have had more luck in other spots I thought. When you say "wood" are you talking standing timber or are you talking more lay down stuff on/near banks?
redshad Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 Blue Cat, the laydowns are usually better than the standing timber. I was fishing just off the bank 3 to 5 ft. They were in tight to the wood.
Bassmaster21 Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Sounds like what I fished some early this summer and had some luck. I was down in turkey creek all the way back by the little bridge. Managed quite a few good ones there. Like you Saturday I had very minimal luck in the mid lake area on points. Just some small ones and nothing more. I think the fishing is about to get really good and hopefully I can drag myself out of the deer stand and get myself on the water.
Members crappie jerk Posted September 24, 2013 Members Posted September 24, 2013 I KNOW HOW FUN IT IS TO FIND A PATTERN ON FISH AND CATCH SOME GOOD KEEPERS.. THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IT DOESN'T COME AS OFTEN AS I WOULD LIKE..I GUESS I'M 90% STUPID AND ONLY 10% LUCKY....LOL
