Lancer09 Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 I am in awe of yalls hair packing technique. That is one aspect of fly tying that I suck at. Mike is head and shoulders above where I am. His are just packed a lot tighter and his proportions look better as well as his trimming is crisp. It does however just take a LOT of practice and wasted deer hair. I know doing some divers for the smallmouth swap a while back made me a lot better, and faster with packing hair too. For the fly above I spun a layer of gray to get a base and then stacked a layer on the bottom and then stacked my colors on the top of the hook. I have always had better luck getting the bottom color to come higher on the body of the fly that way but that's just me. Also, steaming the fly after the initial trim can help get everything freshened up and you can hit it with a razor one more time and get some really neat nice lines.
Members MikeH Posted December 4, 2013 Members Posted December 4, 2013 Well I started one. I have it trimmed and started in the hair. I'll be coming back to it. I think I had six clumps of hair to the eye and y pi r right that la sad one is a real bear. It takes a ton of deer hair first sure too. It's not as good as mikes but it's coming along. I still have to do the tail, the second set of fins and finish the mohawk. Nice! I think you're going to regret not tying the tail in first though.
Lancer09 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Your right.... I did. It wasn't that bad I just had to hour them in carefully. Sorry that last message of mine was nearly unreadable.
Lancer09 Posted December 13, 2013 Author Posted December 13, 2013 D&D. I also did a triple... but it was a bit snakey looking. Hog snare
Geoff Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Nice! I still need to order some CCG eyes and play around with them. I guess I will after the holidays. I was looking thru my stuff last night and I really need a good restocking on a few key things after a couple years, plus all the new crap I want. Flysmallie Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I still need to order some CCG eyes and play around with them. CCG has the best eyes.
SpoonDog Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 The one I tied for the swap is a mash up between a hang time , double deciever, and a circus peanut. I have dubbed it the "hanging nutty deceiver" or HND for short. Really great ties on here folks, thanks for sharing. Trigg- I'm curious how you did the head on this guy. Craft fur and CCG like a deadhead minnow? Or something else?
Lancer09 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 From what I can tell It's bucktail and a lot of ccg. Ccg eyes are Awesome. The fishskull eyes are good too for the money. I've been filling up my boxes of the small stuff recently. Copper Jon's, scuds and pheasant tails.
Ozark Sweetwater Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Really great ties on here folks, thanks for sharing. Trigg- I'm curious how you did the head on this guy. Craft fur and CCG like a deadhead minnow? Or something else? Lancer is correct. It's reversed tied bucktail,CCG eyes and thick CCG. The thin will work but the thick makes it much easier. It works best to do it in layers. I also top it off with CCG Hydro or Sally's Hard as Nails. http://ozarksweetwater.com
Flysmallie Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Little SF Flashblend, little Lite Brite, still rockin the CCG eyes.
