JohnF52 Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Where do you put in? I have heard all the ramps and shoreline are closed, and you cannot legally use a boat unless it is docked somewhere.
J-Doc Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 There are ramps that are not owned/managed by the Corp of Engineers. I don't know who "owns" the 12 bridge ramp but it's open. Who said you can't be on the water legally unless you have a docked boat? Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Feathers and Fins Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 ONLY CORPS PARKS ARE CLOSED, You can still be on the lake and on the shores and hunt them even. 12 bridge is AGFC and there are numerous other private ramps. I specifically asked the question on ACE website on Facebook for Beaver lake and have the reply. Scott Bice Several questions I would like answered. #1 Is the public allowed to be on and use the lake during this shutdown. ------ #2 If the lakes are still open to the public, are the Boat Ramps still open for use. ------- #3 What ramps are open, and what ramps are closed? These questions are specifically for Beaver Lake only thank you. Like · Reply · October 2 at 6:53am U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Beaver Lake Arkansas #1. Yes #2/3. No Corps boat launch ramps are available on Beaver Lake. There are other state and private options. wc1063 Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I was trolling with my 24V trolling motor, going about 1.5 to 1.8 mph. If I push it too far, the batteries drain really quick!! My two stroke 150 Merc goes too fast for trolling, barely in gear, I'd be running about 3.5 mph so I don't use the big motor for trolling. I was trollin #7's, I need to go pick up some 5's and 6's!!!!!
1969Larson Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 So how about the paddlefish? I've never caught one and probably wouldn't know what to do with it, but they have always fascinated me? Just a random snag?
Feathers and Fins Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 Ya I snagged it while trolling, honestly thought I had snagged a big log/limb. Pulled in the second line and backed down on the (snag) it finally kicked back and my first thought was I had a Flathead. When it came up to the surface I could see it was a paddlefish. I reached down and unhooked it, I kept having visions of the hooks popping out and nailing me. Neat fish but not fun experience in high winds boat bouncing trying to unhook it. maybe a 60lb fish at most. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

I was trollin #7's, I need to go pick up some 5's and 6's!!!!! Unless I am working into a good wind, my main motor pushes my rig at 2.8 to 3.0 mph. Most days in Spring and Fall that is too fast. However at 2 mph the batteries for the trolling motor drain too quickly. I have toyed with the idea of a kicker motor, but on my 16.5 tin boat that seems a bit much. My solution has been to put my motor in and out of gear. For example, if my target speed is 2 mph, I put the motor in gear until I reach 2.4 mph. Then I pull it out of gear and coast until I am traveling 1.6 mph. I find the system works and that the varying speeds seem to trigger bites.
J-Doc Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 That sounds like a lot of gear shifting to me. I'd opt for the kicker motor. Or a trolling plate over the prop. I can't believe I'm seriously considering a deep v with a kicker motor as my nee boat. Equipped with Cannon downriggers, etc. F&F is rubbing off on me. It's like gum on your shoe. Can't get it off of you. Hahahaha Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. wc1063 Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 However at 2 mph the batteries for the trolling motor drain too quickly That's my problem, I could get the trolling motor to go above 2 mph, but it probably last an hour and starts to slow down!! If I run the trolling motor at about 1 to 1.2 I could be on the water all day with the same speed!! I've tried the in and out of gear a few times, it's a pain keeping the boat at the constant speed while looking at everything else( fishfinder, planar boards with flag, rods and lines without the board, and where the boat is going)
