Walleyedmike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Here's a short youtube video that Walleye Pro Jim Carroll posted recently. They are fishing jiggin raps in North Dakota. He doesn't spend a lot of time explaining the technique, but I think it's worth a watch. Interestingly, he catches many of his fish on the end hooks, which PD prefers to cut off. Maybe Lake Sakakawea isn't as snaggy on the bottom as Stockton is. WM

ten_scoach Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Who is the crappie guide on stockton you are reffering to? I would love to spend a day with a guide this winter to learn how to jig like this.
powerdive Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 JR Oldham. He runs a lodge and guide service on Stockton. Nice guy. http://www.anglersmidwest.com/ dan hufferd 1
hknfsh Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hey Powerdrive. Diehard basser here....but your explanations on spooning make me want to head up and try it out when the bass clam up. Have spooned for whites on another lake and they were at 60 feet. They slammed the spoon. Big sows too....nothing under 15 inches. Had a blast. Thanks for the info.
powerdive Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hknfish, I consider this the most fun fishing of the whole year. I don't keep whites, but they do put up a good fight. One good thing about the deep crappies--not many shorts. Here's a sunny-day catch from January of this year...a few nice walleyes and crappies for the freezer, but not the numbers we were hoping for. Probably because of the 100+ big whites that wouldn't leave our lures alone that day. On Big Sac, 28-40 feet, using Raps, spoons and blade baits.
hknfsh Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Nice looking catch Powerdrive. I've yet to show my son your post but I know he'll be game for this technique. Been wanting to try for walleyes in some fashion last couple years so he'll be enthused with this. Got the spoons..... just need to go do it !!
frying eyes Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 This past February I put in at crabtree and noticed JR heading back in the rock quarry so I thought I would check it out. It was a windy sunny day. The water temp was 2-3 degrees warmer and there was shad everywhere! I was snagging them with crank baits. Just a heads up, might be a good place to keep a eye on when the temp drops. Good fishing!
powerdive Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Nice cooler! DeadHead No, it's not. That's why there's fish in it, ya goof!
