Mr Hypocritical here. I am shocked, SHOCKED, that SLU didn't even make it to the pre-season Top 25 in college basketball rankings.

Who cares, right? Don't I always say that? Rankings schmankings. Decide on the court.

Well, I'm a little miffed, still.

Geez. We are really fly over country.

Kind of like Mike Matheny and the Manager of the Year vote. There is such a huge subset of the voting sport writing population with an axe to grind , that it is not even funny. ("Well, I predicted (so and so) to come in last place at the start of the season, so, since they (my prediction) performed way better than I expected, I think their manager deserves an award).

Never mind that the original prediction was, not only off-base, but blatently wrong.

Whew. OK. Ankle hurts after turning it getting off the ole soapbox.

Well, they lost convincingly in the second round of the tournament last year, and that's probably what most are remembering...that and the fact that they lost a lot of offense in Mitchell and Ellis. But their defense should still be excellent, and the four seniors, Evans, Loe, McCall, and Jett, should be very good. I just wonder whether any of the new guys can play. I haven't heard a thing about anybody once you get past those four, Manning, Glaze, and Barnett.

I mean, it's really impossible to get too upset at a preseason poll. Can you really point to any of the teams above SLU and be sure that the Billikens are better? I can't. Their style of play isn't that exciting either which doesn't help in polls. That's dumb but it's how the polls operate, with people pretending like the "eye test" is a real, quantifiable thing.. It doesn't effect the selection committee anyway which is all that really matters. The A-10 is set to take a step back this year (perhaps a massive one) with the Big East coming for Butler and Xavier, and Temple to the AAC. That leaves VCU and SLU as your programs that have been really good in the past few years. Better play well right from the start or it may be automatic bid or bust.

They probably should have gotten more than three votes though. But hey, that leaves you tied with Missouri. Realistically SLU has the better chance to get to the tourney if nothing else than because they should have a good chance to win the conference tourney. No one but VCU should scare this team even a little.

I am looking forward to it. I guess I'm going to be at Mizzou's game so I'll miss out on most of the good games tonight. But it's a long season and I'm excited as heck!
