J-Doc Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Anyone ever use one of these? The H20 Mettle baitcaster at Academy Sports? I was told that the H20 series reels are made by Pfleuger so it's a quality reel for a great price. http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/h2o-xpress-8482-mettle-low-profile-baitcast-reel-right-handed/pid-133325 I bought one last year and used it for casting A-rigs. I can literally cast the A-rig so far that I run out of line with a full spool. Not joking. This reel casts really far and out-casts anything I have including some nice Shimano reels. I recently spooled up some 10lb Segaur flourocarbon and a War Eagle 1/8oz spinnerbait. I cast it very gently to avoid a backlash trying to adjust the reel. The spinnerbait flew surprisingly very far. After I dialed in the reel, I can cast it effortlessly and get a lot of distance. Even in the wind, it does really well. I bought 2 of these today. One reel has a bit of a noise in it so I'm going to take it back and exchange. Other than that, I've been really impressed and especially considering these are on sale with last year's Black Friday sale price! I would advise trying the reel before leaving the store just in case it makes a noise. I may have the only one out of 100 that makes a rough gear noise. Who knows. I do know that I'm really happy with mine and I thought I'd pass along a great deal. Oh and I finally found someone who knows who makes the H20 series rods. Berkly and Shimano. I have 5 and I really like them because they are affordable, sensitive, very light weight, and a great rod. I have rods that cost over twice the price the H20 rod costs and for the money, I can't really see the big difference. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. Buzz Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I've been impressed with all of the H2O products I've tried so far. I've heard good thing about the reels too. I've been meaning to check them out further. Looks like now's a good time. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
bluebasser86 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I bought one of the Mettles this fall when they went on sale for $30. I put it on an extra 6' 6" M/F casting rod I had in the garage just with the intention of using it anytime I'm bank fishing or just need an extra multipurpose rod in the boat. I've been amazed how far that reel cast and how easy it was to dial in. It does feel "cheaper" but I've caught some good fish with it and put it through some pretty good abuse and other than some scuffs it's still going strong. Heck, I figured if it makes it for a year I've got my monies worth out of it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I needed it. Would probably be a great starter casting reel for someone too.
J-Doc Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 It really does have the ability to cast far and with ease. I admit, the first one I picked up felt cheap but I bought it strictly for the A-rig thinking if it lasted a year I'd have my money's worth. It has lasted about a year now and shows no signs of wear at all. I've flogged it with the A-rig and it just keeps on casting smooth. While I know there are superior reels........there are NOT any superior reels for $30 that I'm aware of. Truly a great beginner reel and could possibly spoil someone. After I bought two yesterday, I realized, I don't have a rod to put them on. Oh the wows of not having enough rods. Guess I'll have to go pick up a couple of those H20 rods now! Stump bumper Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I am a couple rods ahead of reels so put this on birthday list for next week, thanks for the idea.
J-Doc Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 And now the price has dropped to only $20!!!!! Grabbed another two reels today I've been impressed so much by them. For that price, I am most happy. They have a lot left too in the Rogers store. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! Stump bumper Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 The web site still has $29.99 in my book that is $30, are they down to $19.99 in Rogers?
Old plug Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 They should be down to 19.95. I read about them on the internet. Google up H20 reels. Also that one down there is ia a plastic frame. Lot of bad reports on it on the internet.
J-Doc Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 Yes it's marked down to $20 and I have no quarrels with it. I've had one for 2yrs and loved it. A lot of the reviews so it will outcast just about any reel. Mist of my reels are Bass Pro Shops Extreme or a couple of BPS Prolites. The H20 reels cast easier, smoother, and farther. I also added some Hot Sauce reel oil to the brearings on the H20. I Like their products. Yes, I'm sure there are better but when you're on a budget, you buy what you can get at a great price. Old plug Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I was tempted to try it. But I will wait. I have these old Garcia's and they have really stood the test of time. They go out nearly every day For at least 2 hours almost every day from march through september. Outside of that time I am mostly into spinning reels. They been going on now at least 15 to 18 yrs. I do clean them and I oil them every few times I am out. I hope those you bought will do that for you.
