Stereo Advice?

My boat came with a marine in-dash stereo, no cassette or cd player.

I wanna play some CDs on those lazy summer days.

I thought about getting a "slave" CD player, but the radio's kind of a pain. It's a well-known brand (Seaworthy), but it's one of those theft-deterrent jobs where the face plate pops off, and it won't hardly stay together.

Anyway, getting around to my question, is there really a difference (besides price) between an auto and a marine stereo? Thanks for the input.

I really don't know for sure what the difference is, but I would suggest it might have something to do with corrosion resistant connections and components? Maybe?

Dunno Ken, I worked on carrier based aircraft electronics when I was in the service, and EVERYTHING corrodes. Sounds like a good research project for your kids. Whatever you get, make sure that you can hook up and iPod, MP3 players, etc. See ya a party cove !

I can't say for sure about radios, but I use to work for a company that made parts for larger marine engines... The parts had to meet certain corrosion resistant standards to be acceptable. I know that regular car stereos will probably have problems due to being "exposed" to the elements... draw moisture.. much more than those that have marine components.

Then again... I've seen regular car stereos in boats... Don't know how long they lasted, though...

I'd go with the car stereo! They aren't really that expensive to replace anymore. Plus, I think you'd get more for your dollar. Just looking at catalogues, the marine versions cost more with less stuff. I replaced the one that came from the factory in my boat. I couldn't hardly pick up a radio station anywhere. The car version seems to have a better tuner, sounds better, and has a CD player. I store mine indoors, so it's not like it's on a lift somewhere exposed to the elements when not in use.

Thanks for the responses so far... I would figure that marine speakers might be important(?), and I'll keep that as-is so I'm leaning towards a car stereo. Then again, I did a quick look through Dutch's Overton link and was reminded that some marine stereos have weather bands, which would have come in handy a time or two over the years.

Gavin, great to hear from you... I'd still like to fish w/ you one of these days, are you going on the WFT this year? Maybe I can make the '07 roundup.

Anyways, the boat's in the garage, it's cold cold outside, and my fishing buddy's in school... I wonder if he, like I, is daydreaming of summers past and summers to come?

Ken, the WFT usually kicks off the Wednesday or Thursday after the new year. The party gets a little out of hand at times but I'll talk to Kip if you are interested. I'm also trying to round up a few folks for a Friday-Sunday float on the 11pt in February.... Let me know.

I mite add to the situation something.The marine radio is also shock resistant.You dont hit a lots of wake cruisin the ole cheeeeevelle down to sonic.,But on good ole table rockits another story.
