I have also had luck just taking the cowl off and removing the peetube and letting it just shoot straight out not going throught the fitting and out the PeeHole. I run it like that for about 10 minutes then put it back together and it is usually fine. I usually have to do this a few times a season, most of the debris will come out if it is just flowing through the hose. I also repalce my waterpump every two years just as a precauaution because I suck up alot of crap...

Fishinwrench, finally took time and got my Merc fixed I think. Pulled thermostat as you said, and wound dropping the jet to check impeller. It had a little damage, but went ahead and replaced it. Flushed water from the bottom and a ton of crap shot out the thermostat housing. Also shimmed up my jet impeller while I was at it. I'm ready to go fishing!! Holler a me sometime!! Your wealth of knowledge on things like this is appreciated!!

Also, the guy that I bought the parts off of says that a 25 4 stroke merc is basically a Tohatsu engine?

Awesome. Good Job ! :)

Yeah Tohatsu stepped in after Merc and Yamaha went to blows. Id love to tear into a few 4-strokes but as of yet nobody has been willing to foot the bill. They are a disposable powerhead and I expect them to stay that way. I would never in a million years buy a used one.

This guy was a big fan of the TLDI Tohatsu's, what's your take on them. I had a 04 40 Nissan I ran till 3 years ago, and traded it for an Etec for my Duck boat. LOVE the ETEC, but that Nissan was flawless for 8 years also.

Well, there aren't many of them around theses parts. One that came to me had a bearing squealing in the compressor and the bearing wasn't available as a replacement item. Had to order a new compressor and it took just short of 2 months to get one through a dealer. That sucker was 700.00+/- and I never determined why the bearing failed (oil was being delivered to the top of the compressor just fine).

That issue is definatly not exclusive to Tohatsu, Merc Optimax compressor failures are common too, but with them there is always a related cause.

I guess the only thing that put a bad taste in my mouth about that Tohatsu is how freakin long it took to get the blasted thing. When something is "backordered from Japan" you just lost a season, at least.
