LittleRedFisherman Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Been planning when the weather and roads get better to try my hand at some Winter River Walleye. This picture is from a friend of mine that got into some last week. There starting to catch some now in the Current River here in Arkansas, where it starts to run deeper. He also showed me a pick of a ligitamate 5 pound smallie a walleye angler caught on the Current river down here while jigging a grub for walleye, i'll try to get that pic.. He passed them as they hung it. I have tried this before, but haven't had much luck, last year the rivers were so low, the walleye didn't make there "move" up in the Current river. A walleye was caught here that was tagged his said, it was released in the Eleven Point river in Missouri, but caught in the Current river near the Ar/Mo border. So it went down the EP, into the Spring, then up the Black, into the Current and went another 60 miles, pretty neat! I've got some Grubs ready, and hope to go next week! The challenge of catching this elusive fish has my interest!! There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
Guest Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Does nt stand for not telling where? Nice fish, you can overnight the fillets to me.
LittleRedFisherman Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Try again Andy, posted on my phone, but wanted to type on computer...lol There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
LittleRedFisherman Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 I caught one this summer while bass fishing on the EP, but there's some serious winter guys that fish around here. I'm an hour away from good walleye fishing, I need to try it more often. There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
Al Agnew Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I really wonder what the walleye population is in the Missouri portion of Current River these days. Way back when, there was a big gravel pit hole at Doniphan, which is now totally filled in, that held a lot of walleye over the winter, and there were plenty of walleye in the deep pools up to the Big Spring area. And there were certain pools that held big walleye all winter all the way up to Round Spring. The last really big walleye I heard of being caught above Doniphan was probably 5 years ago, a 16 pounder. The guys in my area that still fish for them in the winter have mostly stopped fishing the Current and fish the Black in several places between Clearwater Dam and Poplar Bluff, but I don't know whether it's because the fishing got worse on the Current or whether it's just because the Black is closer.
LittleRedFisherman Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Last year, there were a lot of small males caught, but with the good flows this winter, the bigger ones have moved in. Supposedly a 12 pounder was caught recently. When the river falls off into the delta, there's some big holes scoured out. Its kinda neat, for a few miles there characteristics of a delta river, with Ozark quality water, with smallmouth also being caught occasionally.. There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
