Justin92297 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I'm heading down to Bennett next sunday for my first time ever. Any suggestions on what flies/ lures to use? What works best this time of year?
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Small, #16-#18 nymphs generally work if you fly fish. Marabou jigs work well on spinning rods. Check with Weavers, on the south side of 64 just east of the upper entrance and Larry's, can't miss it as you start leaving the stream area toward the upper entrance. They both always have a good fix on what's happening. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
patfish Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Black and yellow 1/100th jig under a float at the horn. When things get slow, move to a cream thread jig then to an olive or brown roach.
Justin92297 Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Thanks, and also what parts of the stream should I focus on? I'm only there for a day and don't want to waste any time
John W Kelly Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Thanks, and also what parts of the stream should I focus on? I'm only there for a day and don't want to waste any time Zone 1. From the spring to the spillway dam. That will take up your whole day. You can always come back for Z2 or 3. If you like to fish pools, then there is a large pool above the spillway, and another below the spillway (which is the beginning of Zone 2). Further up zone 1, closer to the spring, is a rock dam with a pool above it and one sort of below it. Then there is sort-of a pool at the spring. The rest of Zone 1 is made up of longer runs, some fairly shallow, some deeper. Just explore and enjoy! Here is a photo/video slideshow I made on opening day (March 1st). It begins at the pool below the spillway and ends at the spring. HTH!
Jeff Tief Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Zone 1 can be tougher if the wind picks up very much but always holds a lot of fish.I always take a peak off the handicap ramps if it's available as it gives you a great look into the deeper water and sometimes bigger fish.Course the wind won't hurt you as much if your throwing bigger jigs on spinning gear or 1/100 oz stuff under a float. That chop on the water makes that 1/100 oz. jig dance.Good luck.
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 My choice would be from the Whistle Bridge to the outlet. The outlet hole is always very good, but often too crowded. The area in front of the Whistle is called just that and the water from there to the Outlet hole, the water where the outlet enters the stream, is often called the Long hole. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Justin92297 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Ok thanks a lot! Also Can you use a spinning rod in zone 1 and is the outlet hole in zone 2 or 3?
laker67 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Ok thanks a lot! Also Can you use a spinning rod in zone 1 and is the outlet hole in zone 2 or 3?All of the outfalls are in zone 2. But as Wayne stated, it can be crowded and is, more than not. I was there yesterday, a weekday, and I counted nine people within a half a rod length of each other at the outlet above the whistle bridge. Hundreds of 8,9, and 10 inch fish. I looked over the rail at the stone bridge and discovered even more fish in the 6 inch range. A pitiful site indeed. Visited with Corky H. and Mike R. and didn't even wet a line. The wife and I walked from the spring to the whistle bridge and then back again. It was most enjoyable to just relax and visit with old friends.
