Old plug Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 WHARFRAT------- There is awful lot more 10 to 13 inch bass in this lake than 19" bass to begin with. It is like that anywhere. With Bass I do not like the practice of taking them off spawning beds. I refuse to do it. I do not care how big the bass is on that bed. I know the minute that bass is yanked the little bluegill will descend like a cloud on that bed and eat the eggs.

Aren't you the one who keeps talking about how cold the lake is? I am thinking everything is still prespawn right now and will be fishing accordingly.
MOsmallies Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Yeah there is absolutely no chance bass or crappie will be spawning by next weekend... A-Rig, Jerkbait, Wart, and Jig will be all you need to throw
WHARFRAT Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 If you saw the conditions of the eggs in the black crappie I cleaned this weekend, you'd say they were not too far off. Last year on the Big Niangua, the big White females started coming in around the end of the 3rd week of April. The first of May they seemed like they were done and scattered all over the place. Since the ice has been gone, I haven't caught but a handful of white crappie. Seems like 90% have been all black crappie. That's been unusual too. I can't explain the resurgence of so many black crappie. Years past, it always seemed like a novalty when you would catch one. For me, post spawn crappie are the toughest to find consistanly. Then, it gets better when they get in their summer pattern, then its "balls to the walls" from fall through pre-spawn for the big ens!!!!! This has been one of the best yrs for consistant size for me during the pre-spawn. @lozcrappie Â
Old plug Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Blazerman------- I did not say they were going to be on the beds this weekend I said I do not like the practice of taking them off the beds. I will know when the crappie ready to spawn. I and my neighbors have 200 ft of crappie beds between 3 docks.
Blazerman Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Ok Old Plug got it. My mistake. I thought you were talking about fishing during the Big Bass Bash next weekend. WhardRat, definitely hear you. My buddy and his brother caught 70 Saturday and he said the same thing. Best size of crappie he has seen in a while. Can't wait to get down there next week.
Old plug Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Warfrat you in a pretty early spot up there. You are close to the river and also a large spring. Around here you will see a lot of eggs in a crappie In December sometimes. I think fish can hold their eggs till the time is right. The length of day and the suns position thru the day has a lot to do with it. Black crappie rule the Gravois. But we do see more white than we used to. 15 yrs ago a white was a rarity around here. Wrench was cleaning up on Blacks last week. They were all pretty big. I was up in his area though and went back in a cove because of the wind and caught a pile of 5 in White Crappie. They just seem to have seasonal territories. Down here the best way to catch the better crappie after the spawn is to Troll the channel. They and white bass both are channel hugger all summer. Sometimes you will be catching both. The best troller I know uses both plugs and the BPS little tail spinner. I got some of those Little tail spinners, although I do not troll. They are real good and not because of the color are anything like that. They are made with a flattened fish shape body with the majority of the weight in the bottom. Most true running spinner tail I have ever used. That Mann's will roll and twist your line a lot.
Old plug Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 OH SHITE Blazerman. Is that coming this week end. ??????? They might be hitting it right if this rain were suppose to get is warm. I think the water temperate is still pretty low. I was down on the dock trying to learn to cast my new cast net And just like the old one I make a mess of it. But the new one is 3 1/2 foot. And I can cost it just by holding it up and wide between my two arms and letting it fly. I hope to get out tomorrow afternoon. I do not have the go get um I used to have by no means.
Blazerman Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 The Big Bash Bass is the first weekend of April and i think you are right might be hitting there at a good time for big prespawn bass.
