Members FrozenFingers Posted April 15, 2014 Members Posted April 15, 2014 I have an Ascend Fs10 kayak and im trying to figure out the best way to mount my transducer in the bottom to shoot threw the hull, the only problem is it is slightly curved on the bottom even in the flattest part. Will this effect the reading much? Ive had trouble finding a good way to do it on the internet. Seems like alot of weird ways to do it and they seem just a little...rigged up i guess. If ayone knows how I could do this or know of any websites that show how that would be great thanks.
moguy1973 Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 What kind of fish finder? Humminbird has a kit that works with any transducers that are the triangular shaped transducers ( http://www.amazon.com/Humminbird-MHX-Kayak-Transducer-Mounting/dp/B001I7SMJK ). I guess that only really works if there is a flat portion of the bottom of the kayak though. Most people use Marine Goop to stick it to the bottom of the kayak and they say that works well. Being a sit-in kayak is there a place in the rear of the kayak behind the seat that is flatter than what is in the front? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
jdmidwest Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I bought a cheap Eagle portable a few years back and it works good enough for structure, depth, temps, and fish arches. Runs on 8AA batteries and has a suction cup mount. Just wet the cup and stick it to the side of the boat at the waters edge. Every thing comes back off. Don't have to mess with a heavy lead battery. And I used it on my jon boat or as a secondary on the bass boat. With rechargable batteries I usually made a few trips before recharging. If the batteries died, I would pop in regular batteries to finish out the trip. I have seen on several yak sites where they just place the puck in a well of water inside the hull and shoot thru it. Most make a little open box inside the hull with metal and silicone, filled it with water, and placed the puck into it. Members FrozenFingers Posted April 16, 2014 Author Members Posted April 16, 2014 moguy1973 I have a Lowrance Elite-4x. Under my seat is the flattest place but it still has a slight curv and i didnd know if that would mess with the reading much or not. I have some marine goop but im not sure if want to set it in permanentor not. I guess any way would be permanent for a kayak. jdmidwest do you know the site name I could see how they set it up? thanks for the info.
moguy1973 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I looked around and it looks like a few other people with the FS10 and they put it under the seat with the marine goop...just have to make sure you get all the bubbles out of the goop or it won't work as well... I saw another guy that made a bracket for the transducer and mounted it onto the back of his FS10 where the flat part is. That way you can get water temps more accurately too...You'd just have to watch running into things if you end up backwards but his bracket looked rather beefy and would take quite a hit to damage it. I'll see if I can find it. Here's the video of the bracket, and he actually used heavy duty velcro to mount it so if it hit something it would come off without damaging it: And here's how he rigged the rest of his kayak: -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
jdmidwest Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Here is a link I found that accomplishes the same thing, except the one I remember used water instead of the foam block to eliminate any air gaps. http://inside hull transducer mount for kayaks Other options, I like the scupper hole idea, most sit on tops have them. http://www.fishfindersource.com/4-ways-to-mount-a-transducer-in-a-kayak/ "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S.
