J-Doc Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 This should help explain things a bit without going all "geek" on you. :-) To understand this, you truly need to know the fundamental differences between traditional low frequency sonar, structure scan (hi frequency sonar) and side imaging (or side scan) which is hi frequency sonar looking outwards at an angle away from the boat. There are lots of quick Youtube videos on this. Also the link I shared above provides some breakdown on screenshots and understanding what you are looking at. Here is an image where I have provided a rough interpretation. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! Members Corker Posted May 9, 2014 Members Posted May 9, 2014 Great break down J-Doc... I am the Son on the trip with Zarraspook... We had a great time out there and I learned a lot from Zarraspook on reading my graph on this last fishing trip. I have the HDS 7 Touch with structure scan. Spending the time to learn how to read and interpret you graphs is well worth the reward you will get. I hate to admit I was lacking in that area. So for anyone out there taking the time to review the YouTube videos and reading up on it can make a big difference on your fishing trip. Don't be like me and assume that you have one so you can catch fish. The only down side is having this technology, seeing the fish, and they wont bite, but that is a whole other topic... Corker...
J-Doc Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 You're welcome. It's my thing. I've become a bit of a sonar junkie.... I was watching the Dr. Sonar HDS training DVD last night. I'm simply blown away at how advanced the technology is these days. It's nothing short of having a mobile science lab on the water. Look for some killer screenshots from me in about 2-3 months when I get the new HDS10 and become comfortable with it. I plan on making my own map of the Monte Ne amphitheater area that will overlay side scan images on top of a hi-def contour map. It will be like looking directly at the underwater ruins on a map. Feathers and Fins Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 If you really want to understand the Side-scan take a screen shot and fold it in the middle at about a 22.5 degree angle so the sides are laying flat but the middle is raised to that degree, that is approximately how it would be in real time. Center is straight up and down and doesn't show for about the first 10ft. Looking at the shots above I would say a rod on the left side of the boat set back about 50ft was the one that got hit. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

Very close !!!! left side 85-90ft back..... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
Feathers and Fins Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Interesting it was the following school and not the one at the edge of bait. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
