Fishrman Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Put my boat in Sat. and when the trailer hit the water, there was smoke off a wheel, like it was hot, got home and it felt fine to the touch. Any ideas? Thanks
motoman Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Bearings or a stuck brake maybe. - +1, make sure the bearings are greased up every trip. And a stuck caliper or stuck backing solenoid, locking up the brakes could be the culprit? - Tough to say specifically without more details of trailer year, type, axle count, brakes/no-brakes, oil hubs/greaseable hubs; things like that. But, like dtrs mentioned, those sound like the most suspect culprits for the smoke/steam.
REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Speaking from experience, nothing ruins your fishing trip faster than having a bearing go out on the way to the lake. it's so easy to just squirt some grease into the hubs. If you were coming down a hill or riding the brakes the pads and rotors/drums will heat up, possibly making steam when it hits the water.
Members Willyh08 Posted May 12, 2014 Members Posted May 12, 2014 Had the almost same thing happen to me last Fall. Check to see if there's brake dust on the wheels - sure sign that your brakes are dragging. Mine was caused by the surge brakes not releasing. Let them cool down, got the tongue lubed so it worked back and forth and no more problems. The dead give away was the brake dust on the wheels and the smell.
Members Topwater TRL Posted May 15, 2014 Members Posted May 15, 2014 Can you expand please on "got the tongue lubed". I see brake dust on my rims and want to head off a potential problem with my trailer surge brakes. Thanks! Topwater TRL
REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 refering to getting tongue lubed, on a trailer with surge brakes, there is a actuator that slides back and forth, and that needs to be lubed everyonce in a while

Members Topwater TRL Posted May 16, 2014 Members Posted May 16, 2014 Thanks! I guess I thought it was the brake fluid level you might be referring to. I'll look for the actuator. Topwater TRL
