ollie Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I had the chance to go anywhere I wanted today. When I got up at the crack of dawn it was raining and raining pretty good. Bummer, cause I had chosen to go to Elk to even gas up the truck and go to my favorite pond about an hour away. With the rain coming down I decided that it probably wasn't that good of an idea to go very far so I decided to wait it out and just go hit Hickory when it cleared up. About 10 in the morning it started to clear out and I got my trout gear out to see what I could catch. I normally don't fish Hickory in the summer because it normally isn't worth it. I had a feeling today it might be different though. Of course it helps that I only live a few blocks away from the creek so I was able to hit it just right! I waited for the rain to stop then went and hit it hard. First place didn't produce anything so I moved on to the next spot that I thought would produce. With the water on the rise and cloudy from the rain I had a good idea where I could find them. And did I find them! Started out around 10:30 by the time I actually got my jig in the water and ended up catching 5 trout, 4 goggle eyes , and one largemouth! The biggest was somewhere around 14". Definitely a hold over I could tell. If you put in your time and know what is going on you can catch trout year round in Hickory. Buzz can attest to that I'm sure. An olive jig of different variations was the ticket. Both 1/16th and 1/32 . The bigger guy I missed twice before I caught him. I saw him boil the water hitting something on top so I threw out past him and worked the jig fast and almost on top of the water. Third time was a charm. It was still satisfying just to hang out around the house and fish close only because I know it can be tough in the summer on Hickory. Today it was all mine and I had it dialed in! Buzz Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Good call Ollie. The trout are there year round, but you have to work for them. It looks like it paid off for you today. I went into town this afternoon and saw a guy rigged up for fly fishing at the North end. I wish I had been able to fish today. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Big Brown Trout Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 nice man, I've got the day off tomorrow. Maybe I will check if you left me any.. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
ollie Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Are you kidding Big Brown? I kept everything I caught! That way no one else can have the joy of catching anything from this creek! lol That little largemouth was tasty along side those trout fillets.
