bferg Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 So, maybe this is a remedial question but would trolling Flicker Shads at night be productive? I mean, I don't know why it wouldn't but was just curious if anyone had any experience/reports?
Feathers and Fins Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Ive tried it and has not worked for me. Black or Purple spinner baits do and so does Black road runner style baits. I honestly think though I made the mistake of staying to deep and should have been running much shallower with the flickers and that will be my next project. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members Chillfish Posted July 2, 2014 Members Posted July 2, 2014 I have tried it twice now with ok success. Both times were with silver and black Flickers. I didn't have too much time after dark, but we hooked and lost, on a dock cable, what I'm assuming to be a large hybrid one evening in about 18 fow, and also caught a few short eyes and missed 5 or 6 more bites in about an hour after dark the second time in 12-14 fow. The walleye were on the night before the full moon, as the moon was rising. Looking forward to getting out and trying it some more.
nathanhooper Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I have had good luck with it early in the year. Definitely do want to stay shallow. I have not been for a while now, and when I start back out I'll be using the DR more I imagine. But they have enough of an action to them they do produce fish. I think one would be better off with a good loud rattling crankbait though.
Members marknsaw Posted July 5, 2014 Members Posted July 5, 2014 Night trolling does work, you just have to target your fish with the current conditions. With a good moon on, you can try shallow baits in shallow waters, or shallow baits in deep watersl.. I have had decent luck rolling #7 and #9 rapala floaters in 8-15 fow . When there is NOT a lot of moonlight...it's hit or miss. Tough thing about beaver is finding your spots. I learn something new everytime that I am out on the water. It's all just my opinion of course.......
rps Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I have never trolled at night, but if I did I would start with a bait that wobbled wider than a Flicker shad. A wiggle wart or a Hot N Tot. Or maybe a jointed minnow type bait with a wide swimming action. Actullay, that sounds fun and I may have to do it on flats near here.
rps Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 If I remember correctly, Nelson slow trolled a Bomber minnow type bait to catch the state record. I may very well need to try this soon.
