jbooth24 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I'm floating from Kerr to galena on Sunday and want to know what is good to use to get the smallmouth and google eye. I was going to use live crawldads. And what there biting on
Flysmallie Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Green or brown finesse work for the smallies and a small grub for the goggle eye. Plus a topwater and crankbait.
Fishslayer88 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Try a small rebel crawdad you will catch everything in the river. Olive or black 1/16 -1/8 oz maribou jigs work good too.
jbooth24 Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 Thanx for the great advise I will let know how I did on Monday
Members Matt King Posted July 3, 2014 Members Posted July 3, 2014 My favorite James River Smallmouth go-to rig during summer is a green pumpkin seed worm rigged weedless with a split shot about a foot up. Cast around thick cover and be ready for a strike!
jbooth24 Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 What about a green pumpkin seed lizard I bought soome of thos today
Mofloatjunkie Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I have been doing very well using anything that is green or brown. 2 3/4 in tube baits, craw dad looking crank baits, and finesse worms are my go to. I have also had success trolling with live bait such as craw dads, minnows and frogs. And there's no need to buy live bait. The river will provide all you need.
jbooth24 Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 That is what I was going to do catch some by my house on Sunday morning. And I will try some small crank baits and tubes
vonreed Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Live bait will always out fish a lure of any kind from my experience. I always go fishing with a little dip net and bait bucket. Usually small crawdads about 1 to 1 1/2 inches is the best. Or small minnows caught in the shallows. Remember the smallmouth size limit is 15 inches down there.
jbooth24 Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Ya I don't plan on keeping any just catch and release but will keep the google eye thou
