After several failed attempts of contacting a game warden or someone in this region about this I have resorted to forums. After leaving them 8 voice-mails I got the hint, no one is calling me back.

Me and a friend of mine have planned a three day two night float from Greer spring to RIverton. We plan on doing some trout fishing and setting up camp somewhere along the mid point for 2 nights. We would also like to do some squirrel hunting and just to mess around we would like to do it with a Pellet gun. Question is do we still need a hunters ed permit for this? or just purchase the small game permit?

Second question is I would like to bring a handgun with me incase of any predators. My handgun is too large to carry so my friend has agreed to loan me his. If it is tucked in my pack and bullets and clip in another pack do I still have to have a Conceal and carry? Anything special I need to prove whose gun it is, or that I have permission to use it?

If anyone could clear this up for me I would greatly appreciate it. Also if you have any tips or advice on the trip, stops, fishing advice, whatever is helpful. Especially any particular good camping ground with a outhouse or something near by.

You still have to have a hunting permit if 16 or older. I believe you cannot get a permit without Hunter Ed certification. I am 99% positive on that. Not sure on the pistol part of your question though.

You MUST in Arkansas and most states have a Hunters Ed card ( and have it on you while hunting ) and you would need a hunting license to take any game animals. So you have to have both hunters Ed card and Hunting License.

If you carry concealed you better have the permit. If you do not have the permit and get caught and cited you may not be able to get one in the future as it is one of the criteria for disallowing a permit.

Hunters born after 1968 must carry a valid hunter education card, unless ‘HE-VERIFIED’ is noted on their hunting license. Hunters under 16 do not need to have a card if they are under the direct supervision of a holder of a valid hunting license at least 21 years old.

License and Description Cost Obtain Resident Sportsman’s License (RS) Entitles the holder to hunt all game species using modern gun, muzzleloader or archery, and to take a total bag limit of deer. Valid through June 30. Six deer tags and two turkey tags are included with this license. $25.00

I think you are correct about the hunters ed course, I think I will complete that this week hopefully in time for our trip. The gun part I am confused about, if I do not conceal it then is it legal. Since i transport my handgun all the time from the house to the range never really carried it around for protection in the wild.

thank you both

I have no idea of the laws, and if you're gonna bring it bring it, but you do not need a handgun for any predators. Yes, there are a few bears around the area and perhaps a lion (?), but the chances of running across one are nil.

Depending on your age, you will have to have a hunters ed course to get a hunting license. And if you plan to hunt, you will need at least a small game license, even with a pellet rifle.

As far as the handgun goes, as long as you are 21, you can openly carry a loaded handgun in a holster on Federal Land and all of Missouri with the exception of a few cities that have an ordinace against it.

You would be perfectly legal, if you are of age, not a felon, and not under the influence of any drug or alcohol, to carry the firearm in a locked dry box or dry bag if you desire.

That being said, there are restrictions regarding the discharge of any firearm or hunting within in range of any campground, access, or boat ramp. I think there is one on there regarding the discharge of a firearm on the river also. If you are going to hunt, you will have to choose a place other than the above.

I believe you can hunt small game and shoot squirrels from a non-motorized craft along the river. You cannot shoot deer or turkey from the canoe, if I'm not mistaken. I know a lot of people hunt ducks during season from canoes along the rivers.

You should be fine with the handgun carrying it in a dry box...you just can't carry it concealed on your person without a permit.

There are a number of float camps along the Eleven Point at reasonably convenient intervals from the accesses. Most of them are only accessible by river, and they do have pit toilets. You can learn about them from the link jdmidwest furnished.
