Was able to get on the upper Meramec late Saturday afternoon, spent the night on a gravel bar and got off the river around 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Did not know about the super moon until seeing an article in the paper late last week. The full moon, approaching front and a steady river all made for some very good fishing. Numbers, some size and different species made for a great trip. Small jig on ultra-light,

top water on bait-caster and plastic on spinner. Hit the plastics so well did not use the others that much. Looked up the solunar table this morning and sure enough the best action on Sunday was around noon. Nice when an opportunity for a getaway coincides with "super" conditions.

Anyone else get on the water this weekend or use solunar tables to time their trips? Big moon was pretty on the bluffs Sat. night and had the bullfrogs and gar turned on (much noise). Nice to have the ozark streams in our back yard!

Hmmm...I wonder if that's why there was such a big difference in fishing quality between Friday and Sunday. I fished a 3 hour evening tournament Friday on the Gasconade and fishing was tough. Out of 15 boats, I had 5th or 6th with two pounds...yea that bad! A tournament was held Sunday at the same location and some very nice fish were caught by the same guys who struggled Friday. It's amazing the difference a day makes. We fished Sunday evening about 35 miles down river and didn't have much to show for size, but the little smallies were sure hungry.

Sounds like you had an awesome trip!

I fished the elk from 7pm-1am friday night and had some great fishing. Black buzzbaits and finesse jigs were the ticket. Quite a few 15" + fish with a 18" smallie taking the big fish trophy home. about 50/50 SM to LM. Moon was plenty bright to navigate the river and the fish really liked the shallow water that was hit by the moon. I'll be doing it again in august!

npierceuark,

Thanks for the shallow water tip on the night fishing. Did you see more action around midnight? Kick myself but did not fish after dark. Have my calendar marked too, hope it works out. Good luck.

Fishing was best right as the sun was setting and the first couple hours after the moon got over the trees (8:30-11:30) Fishing slowed down after 11 but we were also on the least desirable stretch of the float and we were getting tired. I think if we were on a different stretch the fishing would have remained constant. And honestly I don't think those river bass will pass up a meal at night if they can see it, regardless of the time of night, they really let their guard down.
