sms_alum Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 W headed up to our new deer lease to set some cameras and drop off some stands. The google earth pics showed some ponds so we brought some rods with us. We were only able to get to 2 of the ponds, but I may be more excited about the fishing than hunting. I nailed this guy at the first pond. That pond also has a ton of nice gills and crappie. The second pond had a lot more nice bass. I lost one even bigger and had too many 3-4lbers to count. I can't wait to hit the other two ponds, but I will need a four wheeler to get back to them.

If that were me, I'd consider that a bass fishing lease that just happened to have some deer on it...........
Geoff Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Cant argue with that!! I'd almost leave the deer hunting behind and just bass fish haha "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
MOPanfisher Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 With the warm weather common for deer season openers any more, I would be tempted to be at the pond that has the nice bluegills with a lightweight flyrod, and a rifle on the ATV, best way in the world to see a deer is to be doing something else, of course shooting a deer would certainly ruin a good fishing trip too.
gramps50 Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 That's one beautiful fish. I agree you leased a fishing spot that happens to have deer.
jdmidwest Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 That is a pretty healthy bass, the fish population must be pretty good to make one of them. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
sms_alum Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 I got to hit up the deer lease ponds again over the weekend. One of the ponds seemed pretty thick with crappie so we decided to thin it out a bit. We are on private land, so limits do not apply. Had 44 Sunday morning out of one 30 by 30 foot spot in the pond. All the fish were pretty much 10 1/2 inch clones of each other. We threw back a few small ones, but I am not sure we really put a dent in the population. Anyone have an opinion on keeping crappie populations in check on smaller ponds? Also, had a bull come square up with us while we were cleaning fish. I think I know why this pond never gets fished now. He finally got bored and left after a half hour.

Usually the problem with crappie in small ponds is that they overpopulate and don't get very big, keeping some is a must in most small ponds.
