Andy & JoAnne Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I have an '89 150 Evinrude and need to replace the drive assembly on the starter. 1. I loosened the starter to give me room to remove the assembly. 2. Removed the nut, spacer and spring. 3. Rotated the assembly on the worm gear up the shaft. I was thinking it would just slide off the shaft. Thats what I get for thinking. It is refusing to budge about 1/2 " from the top of the shaft. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
fishinwrench Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 It should just rotate up and off of the shaft. I've never had one stick that tight but if I did I'd just smooth out any visable burrs, give it a shot of WD, grab a hammer and persuade it a bit. Maybe put the drive gear in the vise and use a drift punch to drive the starter shaft out of it ? ***Have a helper hold the starter so it doesn't bounce off the floor.

Worse thing that happens is to just do a full replacement. For boat parts, starters are pretty reasonable. I'll let you know how it turns out.
fishinwrench Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Yeah you can buy a good used starter for that XP 150 for less than the cost of a new drive gear. You can thank Katrina for that.
