bassman1308 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 My son & I have taken up fly/trout fishing at RR and would like to try the area below the TR dam. If I'm looking at the map correctly, we can park around the boat ramp there and it's a short walk to the fishing area. I know it depends on the amount of flow from the dam but can that area be fished from the bank or are waders needed ? Would hip waders be enough ? We'd like to know what to expect so we don't at least feel like complete rookies or get in anyone's way. lol Thanks JC
DaddyO Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Make the investment in boots and waders. If you're serious about the fly fishing, you'll be glad that you did. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 JC - do you know the number to call to get the current flow ? That is key. You can hip/wet wade it at 0 units. But once they crank it on 1 unit, you will be glad to have full waders. (not hippers.. believe me) (417) 336- 5083 I just called now, and the units are 0 - 915.0 - t/l 701.5ft - 0 cfs __(7:13am 8/3/14)__ You might try up at the upper parking lot below the hacthery itself, labled OUTFLOW 7 now. (??) used to be # 1 Then move down to what used to be 2 and 3 below. The key is to move around and see new fish, because these fish see everything under the kitchen sink by noon on a Sunday. Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
bassman1308 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Daddyo, Brian, Thanks for the help, So would fishing from the bank be possible at all or is it that wading is more productive/enjoyable.?
jpb2187 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 So would fishing from the bank be possible at all or is it that wading is more productive/enjoyable.? Fly fishing from the bank MAY be possible in some spots, but you will have much more water at your disposal if you invest in some waders.
bassman1308 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Thanks again, off to purchase some waders I guess. Any particular brand/model ?
ciRe Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 What's your limit in $$$? Waders can get expensive but you get what you pay for.
Mr. Ed Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Make the investment in boots and waders. If you're serious about the fly fishing, you'll be glad that you did. Yep. Not to mention how much easier it is to cast with water behind you vs ground/grass/trees. I fished and absolute awesome lake in CO. No waders that day. Shore fished with about 4' tall grass behind me. That was a fly loosing proposition... but we caught some nice trout.

YOU WILL NEED BOOTS THOUGH... I USE THESE AND THEY WORK FINE
bassman1308 Posted October 9, 2014 Author Posted October 9, 2014 I finally bought waders, stocking foot style. The first pair had a slight leak so returned them for another pair. My son bought the same kind but his didn't leak. He found them on sale so he got his pick. lol I think this fly fishing will be fun. My son really enjoys it anyway. We're staying at Big Cedar starting Saturday so we'll try Taneycomo for the first time, wading. My next question: is there a good place to enter/fish on the south side below the dam or is the north side better ?
