My wife and I decided to forgo sleep and instead take to the creek early this morning. It was a perfect day for putting the fly rod to work (My wife kept it simple and used good old worms). So after grabbing some coffee we headed down to the Tipton ford access. I started off with a frog fly I tied last night, after this failed I switched to my wedding veils. Unfortunately I ran into problems with this flies performance,( I wish now I had taken the time to try out all of them hopefully the single fly I tried is the only faulty one.) after getting very unnatural action I decided to switch flies and try the crawfish fly I tied a few weeks ago. It is based on the Near 'Nuff Crayfish with some variations that I found appealing when I tied them. I was unsure of how they would act in the water, and oh my god was I surprised. The action the fly made in the water was as real as any crawdad I have ever seen, and the bass must have agreed, it was all I could do to keep them off my fly. I had great fun locating feeding bass and flinging it to them , hooking several this way. My favorite moment was when we both hooked up at the same time with two good bass. Today was a great day not only did both of us catch our first spotted bass each, but I also caught my personal best bass. I have no idea on size or weight but it was a pretty good bass. The action was short though, after about an hour things died down. We gave it a couple more hours then called it. Short but sweet with no complaints.

yep here you go, they don't look to terrible dry, but in the water they really come alive.

Sounds like fun. I was there Saturday. I got there a little late and the floaters started coming through pretty fast. I caught a couple LM on a Buzzbait, but the best fish came on the spinnerbait. I lost a really nice LM off a grass line that just about made me sick. Lol. I brought the fly rod, but opted for the baitcaster. I'm thinking of finding a good spot to fly fish tomorrow. Any ideas?

lol let me know if you find any, I don't know when but the wife and I plan to come out fishing shoal today too. last time we fished it we went down to the tipton ford access and it turned out pretty good. I don't know if I have a found a "good" spot to flyfish, at shoal. So many branches fly casting isn't always ideal it seems. If you see a tall guy with a green (stick) flyrod that's me Buzz, maybe we'll see each other out there.

btw Buzz I see your in Diamond. Hows the float from Cherry corner down to Allen Bridge? We keep talking about taking it and haven't yet.

I'll look for you. ** PM for location** access has some of the best water I've found. Mainly because there are no really deep holes that restrict you. You can always get through by wading on one side of the creek or the other. There are a couple of other spots that ought to be pretty accessible with the low water. I'll have to do some checking.

Cherry Corner to Allen bridge is a pretty good float, but it can be hit and miss, at least in my experience. There are a bunch of goggle eye around the old mill, or what ever it was. Overall not too bad. I prefer to float sections below Lime Kiln.

I prefer none of the sections! lol One day I'll have to go with you Buzz, but not this week. Not sure where I will end up.

well I nearly didn't fish today, when I woke it was storming and I decided taking the flyrod out would wait. after I got around I changed my mind and headed to Cherry corner today but there were way to many people, I jumped from there to allen bridge which didn't work out and from there to hickory creek, again to many people. I settled for just testing flies and caught one measly chub. sorry I didn't see your message Buzz, we will have to fish sometime.

I was able to get out yesterday morning before the storm rolled through,I started about 10:30. I tied up a couple of olive Clawdads, yesterday morning, in a slightly smaller lighter size than I have in the past. The smallmouth were on it almost immediately. I caught about 20 fish with all but 3 being smallmouth, one 11" largemouth and 2 decent goggle eye. Slow strips or dead drifting was the key. A couple were at least 13" and I jumped off a couple more nice fish. They really turned on just before the rain started. Off the creek by 2:00 PM.
