I thought what better place to get some help with my reel problem. I have a Johnny Morris JCL2500 and have been super happy up until now. It has been a good reel at a price I can afford but recently it seems to be hard to reel. It comes and goes but I will be reeling in a lure and then it will get stiff and hard to turn. It seems to be getting worse and happening more often. I have looked at the gears and seems to be clean with plenty of grease. Any ideas on what might be happening and how I can fix it?

I would suggest taking it somewhere to be serviced. Bass Pro or Paul's Bait and Tackle. Should only cost about $20-$25 or less and when they are done it'll work like new. My guess is that there's a gear you cannot see or reach that needs to be cleaned and oiled. If it's coming and going, there may be some sort of debris in there that's getting lodged and dislodged. Either way a professional cleaning and oiling should fix it. If it's a broken part, they should be able to fix that as well.

BPS may just toss you a new one. I know at one time they were pretty good at backing their products and even an older item would be replaced, at least in my experience. Take it up there and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Spinning reel? Might have some issues with the spool or spool bushings. That was the problem with some others I chucked in the garage sale pile.

I agree with Gavin. It is sounds like a problem with a part floating around were your reel shaft enters the gear housing. It gets out of line making you reel hard to turn. Then goes back in line and reels fine. that is why it comes and goes. The housing itself might be messed up. Spending money to have it fixed might not help for just a short while if at all.

If it's a spinning reel it sounds reminsant of a problem Shimno had some years back. As the bushing or seal, don't remember which, between the housing and the rotor shaft started allowing in some water the bushing or seal swelled.

If it's a baitcaster dont overlook the level wind drive gear or the level wind shaft.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Take it back to BP. 9 out of 10 times they will replace it with a like or newer model.

If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
