fishbait3 Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 I have been looking at both and know how to use the hummingbirds up to the 899 which are very nice but was wondering if the lowrance would be comparable and there systems are a lil cheaper i have talked with guy at BPS and learned some but would like other opinions and users views.
5bites Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Lowrance does do side imaging. I'm not sure where you heard that or if I'm understanding you correctly. They're both great systems. I've heard lowrance has a slightly crisper image. I prefer humminbird though due to the user friendliness, much better mapping, and the performance is still great. An 899 would be a great unit but I suggest finding a used hd 998 instead. Better transducer and has a remote/separate gps puck rather than it being built in. If this is going by the trolling motor that's a moot point. I run a 998 non hd at the wheel and a 798 at the trolling motor. Screen size is paramount so get the biggest you can afford. Some may argue that but there's no logic to back up why a bigger screen is not better. I'd run an 1198 if I could justify the expense. I run lakemaster cards in my units and for our lakes they have the best detail and coverage. Any specific questions just ask!
zarraspook Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Do you want side/down imaging?? This a screen shot of my Lowrance HDS7 , while on Beaver lake... The second is a screen shot on Stockton... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
fishbait3 Posted August 15, 2014 Author Posted August 15, 2014 5 bites sorry i corrected the side imaging statement. Zarra I prefer down imaging side is nice and has its uses. Im just mainly looking for the most for my money without going brokeand that is very user friendly is it easy to set new spots on graph. I dont need the top of the line just want something that give me an idea of whats below the water.
5bites Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Used 898's go around $700 and 998's $900ish. If you are set on new then the 899 would be your best bet. I keep thinking about selling my 798 and getting a 859 but I can't decide.
zarraspook Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 OK... But, you can see the definition and clarity of the "7" line of the new generation of Lowrance... The Lowrance® Elite-7 Hybrid Dual Imaging™ Fishfinder/Chartplotter Combo will have the same clear/sharp picture.. It only took me 6 months of saving- selling a 522/graph/gps unit, a very small income tax refund and special one night sale at BPS for me to get the HDS unit.... REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 fishbait, just go to bps, and play around with both brands and see which one you like better. me personally, they are both about the same, lowrance seems to be a little easier on the wallet, which is probably why i install more lowrance products than hummingbird

5bites Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 I wanted to add and you may already know, do not buy local. Universalmania.com will save you quite a bit over retail. Normally I'd encourage buying local but this is a no brainer.
