Haris122 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Wanted to gauge what kind of fish one can reasonable expect to find or hook into in the lower Bourbeuse, and in particular near Uehlmayer access. Especially if restricted to fishing from shore, or knee depth wading. Also what kind of luck have you guys had in general there? I stopped for like 30-40 minutes there today around sunset, and wasn't expecting much luck but did end up catching a tiny sunfish of some sort on a spoon. I think it was a longear sunfish. So just been wondering since it's so conveniently close to the highway, what kind of fishing there is to be had around there.
Gavin Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Not the best stretch of the bb. My buddies family place at Goode's Mill isn't bad but no public access. Lots of spotted bass, smally spot hybrids, drum, whites, and some walleye. Better bass fishing upstream. Uhlmeyer seems to be a popular spot for gay men to cruise. Not really a big deal, but it seems to be that areas Jefferson Forest.
Haris122 Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 How about Suckers? I've been wanting to catch some sort of sucker, see how they fight, but I don't know of anyplace close by St. Louis that has them. Does that stretch of the Bourbeuse?
ozark trout fisher Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 That stretch is decent for spots and largemouth and highly marginal for smallies. It's okay, but not my favorite reach. The Bourb isn't an ideal river for wade-fishing at all. Lots of deep pools and private land, and longer stretches of poor habitat than most places. And the areas near the accesses tend to the only places that get significant pressure. If that's the only option, think upstream.
bikehikefish Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 What the others say is true, marginal fishing, hard to wade. I put my kayak in at that access on Sunday afternoon. Three hours of fishing downstream from the access yielded one 9" smallmouth, one spot, a couple sunfish and a gar. The gar drove me nuts and cost me a $5 Rebel Craw. A couple guys in a jon boat were bowfishing for buffalo and pulling a few out.
