rangerman Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Had a good trip this year....at the beginning at least then the bite died. First few days we had more 3-4 pound smallies than you could count. You bass guys would be in sheer heaven. Never had a smallie shorter than 15 inches all week. And my bread and butter walleye went very well. Not a lot of numbers but some REAL quality fish. Salmon bite was so,so and slower than in years past due to influx of water they had over the course of the week before I arrived. Had 7 or so in the 15-20 pound ranger. Again highly recommended trip.
Quillback Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Thanks for sharing, those are some quality fish! What did you use to catch them (if it is secret, I understand). I have to make it up there one of these days.

rangerman Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 Caught walleye trolling #9 purple flash flicker shads. Smallies were caught pulling a 4-6 inch sucker minnow while fishing for walleyes.
curtisce Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Great trip hope to do it next year. Were the smallmouth in deep water? You caught them trolling or casting? The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check
rangerman Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 15-20 foot deep on the smallies. Guys were tossing tubes and goby imitations on drop shot and doing well. Green pumpkin with black flake is about the best color. There is a reason sturgeon bay is the number one smallmouth fishery in the US. You can stay in the bay and catch the 3-4 pounders ALL day. Or go out on Green Bay and do some searching and find the schools of 5-7 pounders. My pops was up there the same time and did just that. He caught 6 on the bay that ran in between 5-6.8 pounds one day. The best time to go in my opinion would be early June. The bass guys put the hurting on the monster smallmouth on top waters at that time.
curtisce Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I can see how just catching a bunch of 3-4# would get boring NOT! Yea I have thought about a June trip but there is alot of other places good that time of year. September offers fewer choices and alot of the tourist have probably moved out of Door County The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check
