Dewayne French Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Ok I need some help!! Last couple of tourys I have been near the bottom on the pack, due to losing keeper fish on a spoon!! I have tried a couple different brands, but nothing short shank or a single hook. What's everybody's general ideas?? I have been using a red treble to see if that would help them get it further back in the mouth, no help there. The weight is normally 1\2 to 3/4 oz spoons Docks to main lake same results?
MOsmallies Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Unfortunately I never fish spoons so I don't have any real suggestions. My only suggestion would be to pose this question on the Table Rock Forum. Lot's of knowledgable guys and some really good spoon fisherman. Good Luck!
Fish24/7 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 what's the rod length and action/power,line size and type, hook size ,ect.? we'll start there.. my spoon set up for vertical jigging 1/2-1oz lures is a high strain 5'6"mh baitcasting rod w/ 10lb fluorocarbon on a 6:1 or 6:3 reel. Hooks, I use an ewg treble when bass fishing, and round bend hooks for fish that don't jump. I use a smaller, stronger hook vs a bigger light wired hook. Red ,bronze or silver , no black hooks.
Dewayne French Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 Rod Denali 7' Worm/Jig Rod & 7'3" Veritas 2.0 Both Med/Hv Reel Revo STX 8.0 Line 10lb Floucarbon Hooks Eagle claw 3X size #4 and VMC Round Bend 1X Short Shank #4 I have used #2 hooks of the same Brands ,
Fish24/7 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 all I can really suggest is try a shorter rod and see if that helps w/ the landing ratio. ever tried a pistol grip rod for jigging?
Dewayne French Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 Yup when totally Vertical jigging (watching the Graph) I got a short 25 year old pistol grip "Lews Speed Stick", seems like it is easier to watch the spoon. I'm thinking due to the shorter Rod you will be closer to the puck and that translates to better viewing or watching the spoon on the graph. Hookups and lost fish I think are pretty evenly matched Pistol vs Rods I mentioned. I have heard that a shorter Rod is better for spooning docks, Shorter that the 7'ers I mentioned. I'm new to the dock spooning thing! So I can't comment on that I'm learning that aspect still. The more I learn the more I really don't understand!!!
Guest Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 It doesn't sound like the hooks. Just lean into them & keep constant pressure. I like a heavy action rod & 20lb floro.
J-Doc Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 My problem is setting the hook. I feel weight or a bite, and I run out of rod setting the hook! Lol. I have had a few come unbottoned due to hooks but not many. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Guest Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 The hookset is similar to a drop shot, just crank down on them & lean back. Let them set the hook. I lost a LMB over 7lbs under a marina bc it sawed the line against the metal bar running under the stall where the motors are sitting. That's why I switched to 20lb floro.
rps Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 There are many who know more than I do, but i will add what I do know. If the spoon has an EWG gap with a point pointed in from horizatal, do not set the hook. Just reel and lift. If the hooks are short shank/round bend trebles, then sweep up and keep the pressure on. Anything else? Sweep and hope.
