I am looking for a set of tires, but I am in a all new area when it comes to buying tires for a 3/4 4x4 Suburban, that will be pulling a travel trailer. What I have been looking at are the Michelins LTX, Goodrich A/T, and the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor, 8-10 ply tires. All are priced about the same, but I need some feedback. Good, Bad, and the Ugly.

Thanks in advance

I drove and Expedition for a lot of years. I ran the Good Year Wranglers on it most of the time that I had it. I burned through them in about 40k miles.

They rode like truck tires. It's a good bet that the Michelin's will give you a better ride, but the Wranglers were good tires for me.

I have an F250 4x4 HD that came with Firestones and had nothing but trouble with the originals and the replacements, as far as keeping them in balance, uneven wear and noisy ride, even with regular balancing and alignment. I switched to Michelins, and paid a little more, but they drive like a dream and have shown good life (wear) and stay in balance. They are much quieter - with a less agressive tread pattern - but still can drive OK around my pastures. Good traction and ride when towing my trailers.

A comment on tires on new vehicles... They ALL SUCK!! Most of the automakers put tires on that are the lowest cost they can. I'm not saying these are seconds or anything, but most new trucks will have "basketballs" for tires when they come off the lot. I had a new '97 Dodge that bounced all over the highway (was travelling a lot at that time) until I went to my tire dealer... He convinced me to put the SAME tires on the truck... I did... and the difference was amazing!! Same brand, model, size, everything...

I will also say that my experiences with Michelins have all been good ones. But I've also had good Bridgestone, Kelly-Springfield, and Goodyear.

Russ, my dad had a 2-wheel drive Suburban that he put 10-ply Michelin LTX-AT's on and put a little over 100,000 miles on them. I just traded a 2003 1500HD GMC Crew Cab 4X4 that had the LTX-AT 10-ply tires with 65,000 miles on them and still had lots left. I pulled a bass boat and a 30' 5th-wheel travel trailer with that truck. Without a doubt the Michelins are the way to go... for me at least.

Hey Russ.

'99 Yukon 4X4 with 150K on it. Michelin LTX-MS tires have over 80,0000 on em.

I think Michelin by far has the best tires out there. Had the same experience with Wranglers on a previous truck that LMW had.

I couldn't get 40,000 out of em and would never purchase another Goodyear product again. Followed that set of Wranglers with Michelins and never looked back. Point is, wasn't the truck or setup that was wearing them out. They were just overpriced soft rubber tires.

Im not sure what they are priced at, but hands down the best A/T tire is the BFG A/T. Ive had that as well as their mud terrain and couldnt ask for a better tire

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Thanks to all who have commented. Am I making this to hard? My mind is spinning.

Russ,

I agree with some others here.

Michelins are awesome tires. Proven over decades.

I've gotten 60+K from their A/Ts in the past, and right now have a set of them on my Explorer.

All good A/T tires are outrageously expensive, so your request for input is a wise one.

Another factor that is important to me, the tire dealer.

I have a great one here is Springfield that I have worked with and trust.

Unless the $$ is a huge difference and you just can't bite off the difference, go with the Michelins.

As they say, it will only hurt your checkbook once.

One thing I learned on the tires I bought for my F-250 decide what you want then check out the prices, when checking for a good price don't leave out the dealers. My Ford dealer had the best price, even beat the so called discount people.
