RiverRunner Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I think that Texarkana ice storm was the worst in Arkansas history. Would you say that this one is worse than that one? We've dodged the bullets all winter down here, I wonder how much longer our luck will hold out.
damselfly Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 well flysmallie -- that pic looks like my entire neighborhood too. i live on the north end of spfld, out in the county in a subdivision that has/(had) LOTS of big mature trees. i have never seen anything like this ~ and i grew up in new england where the winters are pretty bad - at least as far as snow goes,,,but this ice,,,geez! i lost a very large pin oak, that just tipped over, thankfully not on my house, numerous branches, that thankfully did not damage the house. we've been without power & phone since 1/12 about 9pm. my bro and sis in law have power and we are staying there. we did stay in the house sunday night trying to keep a fire going as long as possible and in the middle of the night, the branches really started coming down. it sounded like artillary fire and made me sick to my stomach.....i kept thinking that something was going to come thru the roof. so we shut off the water and we haven't stayed there since. in the block behind us there is a large tree just split down the middle, and one that had three trunks,,,,,well,,,,,one came down on the house, another along side and one was cut down. i thank God that we've not sustained any major damage so far and am praying we DON'T get the snow forecast for tomorrow....i don't know how much more the trees can take! hope everyone is staying warm and safe--the weather has got to take a break pretty soon!
Snow Fly Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I think I understand what some of you/family are going through! Like the wind storms that hit the St.Louis area in July. The destruction that Mother Nature can cause is hard to imagine sometimes. My dad lives in Grove Oklahoma, around 20/30 miles east of Joplin and much of the town is still without power and the number of trees down, he said is hard to believe! Terry Beeson Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 RR, The Texarkana ice storm was worse than this one. But this one is a pretty close second. Basically, Christmas day and two days afterwards, there was absolutely NO TRAFFIC in Texarkana. My ex was manager of a C store at I-30 and Hwy 71. The guy that got caught working Christmas Day slept in the store for two nights because he could not get home - three blocks away. He saw zero vehicles that day and the next until a fire truck came by late that afternoon. I-30 was a truck parking lot. The damage is similar here now, but still not as extensive as Texarkana. It was just unbelievable... But from a personal standpoint, I did not enjoy either storm. ollie Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 Here's a picture of just some of my heartaches that I will have to clean-up when it gets a little dryer outside. I should note that is a pic of my backyard looking out at the boys clubhouse/storage building. Snow Fly Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 It takes so many years for trees to grow and such a short time to be gone! "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
